Many are still used for AMC charters. ATL is one of the AMC arrival airports in the US.

Yup, come up to BWI you're almost guaranteed to see one each day. Occasionally there'll be a 757, but it's almost always L1011's.
And, damn is it cool seeing one of those babies take off.

As to the flight you saw leaving ATL, ATA has been doing a rotator flight that goes DFW-ATL-EDDF-ATL-DFW, so you probably saw it leaving for Frankfurt or for Dallas (or to IND for maintenance!).

Actually those are R&R flights that originate at KWI and operate KWI/FRA/ATL/DFW and return. We'll be picking them back up next month. FRA is a traffic stop but most originate and terminate at KWI.
