Where Did The Term "Firebomber" Come From?

Hello,

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I do wonder...why is a firebomber called a firebomber? Obviously you don't bomb the fire, as I guess it results in more fire...

You do sort of bomb the fire, as in the flight profile is rather similar to WWII bombing runs. Also, many of the planes used to be (and still are) converted WWII era bombers.

I thought they were more normally known as water-bombers. Dropping the water as a bomb to douse the fire. Makes more sense than firebomber.

Firebomb is another word for an incendiary device, not what you'd want to drop under the circumstances.  Smile
