Does anyone have any idea how much runway a 767-400 usually requires?The reason I ask is because I have flown on a Conti 767-400 about 3 times domestically and they always seemed to use up so much. On my last trip on one from LAX to IAH i was lucky enough to be seated on the left side when we took off from 25R at LAX which is 12,000 feet long and I was able to see how much we used using the markers that indicate how much runway is left. The back wheels were up when there was 5,000 feet left, so we used 7,000 feet of runway on a 764 only about 3/4 full on a day when the temp was about 60 degrees. This makes me wonder how a DL 764 which have more seats than Conti's get off the ground at LGA. Do they do the short field take off where they hold the brakes, rev up the thrust then release the brakes when taking off a 7,000 foot runway at LGA or is there some sort of other stipulation? Any help would be great, thanks : )

they might be attempting to calculate the slowest possible roll for their weight so as to maximize fuel efficiency. in other words, they might be able to take off in less runway if they needed to, but they are saving fuel by using the whole runway. faster acceleration would mean more fuel burn.

On a hot (90F), wet day at SL (LGA / KLGA), USA - New York">LGA) the 764 can depart a 7000' runway at 370,000 lbs. This gives it a payload of about 75,000 lbs (assume OEW of 230,000 lb) out to 2000 nm, still air.

There are a lot of factors that go into T/O distance. You can get all the performance data off of boeings website. Keep in mind though that #seats does not indicate take off weight. I'm not familiar with where DL flies 764s to out of LGA, but if its not far, then they probably don't tank up on fuel. Perhaps your long run was due to a large cargo load or the plane may have been tankering, creating a heavy plane.

the CO 767-400's fly into Man, and id suggest they are pritty heavy on take-off with it being the only daily service from manchester (soon to be replaced by 2 daily services by 757's). If they use 24R for departure its 3047 x 45 and they use pritty much the whole lenght of the runway.

I suspect he was doing a very derated takeoff. If you don't need to heat the thing up so much, you're better off not to. Save fuel, save maintenance, lower noise, et cetera.

I don't know how much runway is needed but they obviously don't use full power on take-off on a 12k foot runway. The pilot just wanted to have a slow takeoff probably. I also think that 7000 feet is not too much runway used on takeoff.
