Right, so I want to ask two questions in one topic, completely unrelated, but here they are anyway:

I'll be going to Heathrow to photograph some plane tomorrow, so I'd really like to know about the visitor's terrace. I have read earlier it's in terminal two. Is that true? How much does it cost? Is the view good? Are there souvenir shops/restaurants/other shops around?

The second one is more technical: I used to notice that some planes seem to have engines that are not perfectly round (seen from the front) but oval. Others don't . (I think the A300 and the B737-400 had oval engines). Especially the really old engine inlets (707 etc.) and the really new ones (777, 747-400) are perfectly round, so was that just some weird trend in the 80s? Does it increase efficiency/decrease noise or is it just not really that important? What exactly is the reason for this and why is it not done anymore?

Yes it's true, it's free, it has a souvernir shop and a restaurant.

about the oval engine intake: only 737-300/400/500 have oval engine intake. It's because the CFM-56 engines they use have a much bigger intake than the JT-8 engines on the earlier -200 models. So they designed an oval intake to give the engine more clearance to the ground.

The reason some engine nacelles and inatkes arent perfectly round as correctly stated by JZ is correct, PLUS that on the 737 400 and a few other 73's is that the oil pump and other ancillory drives were relocated from the bottom of the engine to the side. Other aircraft had non circular intakes and nacelles for the same reason. It all depends on the postion of the pumps etc.

Hi Everybody, Buzz here. I can't tell you much about LHR, but i know a fair amount about 737 engines, new and old.
The CFM engines are much fatter than the JT8D engines, and would hang lower. OK, so make the landing gear longer........ not as easy as it sounds. Yes, most of the oil pumps, fuel control, accessory gearbox is mounted on the side of the engine, rather than at the bottom. When the engine is this low to the ground almost everything is easy to reach.
The flattened bottom helps keep the nacelle from scraping on the runway in case you make a Hong Kong Arrival "Wan Wing Loh". (remember the Kai Tak Airport?)

If you have a car, LHR is a doddle. The best place for photographs is just before landing, whichever runways are used. Follow the perimeter road around the airport and you will see places to pull over to take photos. There will usually be police around to move you on so watch out! I was at LHR today for an hour or two before dusk. Not much to mention. C-GAVF AC 767, AC A340, Gulf 330, Cathay 744, JAL MD11. If you dont have a car, then as metioned before, the best place to go is the terrace on T2, but I cant see you getting many clear photos from there (A/C are at stands). you could also try the top of the T2 and T3 MSCP, but I haven't been there for a while. If they are taking off on the Northern runway, get to the Heathrow Visitors centre , either by car or a free bus. You will be able to walk to the side of the runway and could possibly shoot through the gaps in the barrier. Good Luck! Report back on what you saw!

The central engine intake of the Trident was almost triangular in shape! Those of the Comet , being part of the leading edge of the wing, were like flattened ovals.

If you look at the engines on a 737-300/400/500 from the side, the middle of the engine hangs lower that the front intake. The possibility of the engine hitting the ground would be very remote even if the intake were perfectly round.

The biggest reason for the flat bottom on the engine intakes of second generation 737s is to cut down the possibility of debris (including snow and ice) being thrown from the front landing gear into the engine. By flattening out the bottom of the intake, any debris would be thrown under the engine.
