SXM is an expensive destination almost all year. However, this year, US advertised specials that AA essentially matched for high season travel. Unfortunately for your planning purposes, I don't think those specials appeared until mid-late January of this year.

Probably KLM from Amsterdam on selected days only or Air France from Paris, all day long.
If you want to go from the states, most flights leave in the morning so you would have to overnight somewhere in the states probably. There is AA from NYC, MIA, and SJU, which goes all day long but is hard to get to from England. US flies from Charlotte and Philly. Continental flies from Newark but stops in Antigua first I believe. Then if you're going on Saturday, you can fly United from Chicago or Air Canada from Toronto.
Enjoy your trip!

your most affordable airfare from NYC to SXM is to connect via SJU. Delta offers the best fare for those dates you mentioned at $238 RT direct from JFK. Your problem then lies in getting from SJU to SXM. I've posted on here before about the insanely amount American Airlines charges for this short 45 minute flight, SJU - SXM. That segment will run you about $282.00. Your connection times will be minimal as well. ONly one other airline offers direct service from SJU to SXM, that being Caribbean Sun Airlines.
However, by booking on two seperate airlines, especially in the winter time, you would probably want to leave yourself plenty of connection time in SJU because of the potential for bad weather leaving NY. I don't know how the airlines are with missing a flight, especially if your flying another airline to get to theirs.
I have done this before, fly Delta JFK to SJU, then AA SJU to SXM. Those are your best bets.

Looking at Delta's schedule, it looks like jFK to SJU is soon going to be taken over by Song. How about that!
Anyway, sticking to your question, you can probably do NYC to SXM for under $600.00 with connecting in SJU. I would say somewhere around $550.00. Direct flights are going for over $900.00 at this time.
You can also check Caribbean sun airlines. (CSA) There flight schedules are a bit whacky, but are more often better priced then AA. Plus, and this is a big plus, if you take Song, CSA leaves from the same terminal. If you take AA from SJU, you have to traverse to a different terminal, and if your connection is tight, this can cause problems.

From Europe, Corsair would seem definitely to be the cheapest way to go. www.corsair.fr
But yes, it seems that from North America it is invariably quite expensive to get down there. Air Canada started this winter, but their fares also seem fairly high. Air Transat often has some cheap charter fares, but there is probably not much sense in the hassle of trying to send your parents through Canada. Hmmph. I was looking for a long time to head down that way this summer, and I could not find anything for under about $800 US return from YUL. Most of the time it was a fair bit higher than that.
