Smoke From Engine Cowling?

Last year when I was in a plane waiting to take off from Heathrow, the aircraft on the runway (a BA 767 if I remember correctly) powered up for take-off. At that moment a short jet of smoke came through the port engine cowling about half way between the air intake and exhaust. The smoke was still there as the plane disappeared from view.

The aircraft proceeded to take-off without incident and I presume completed its journey safely.

Can anyone explain what may have caused this?

If I remember correctly, there is a vent hole in the cowling for the precific purpose of venting what you saw. In all probability just a bit of excess oil or heat being vented. (I'm sure the engineers here will build on this). There is no danger or anything wrong with the aircraft, it is just doing what it does. The first time I saw it I was a bit concerned as well!!

depending on the location and quantity of the smoke i would say (in my own humble opinion) that the smokyou saw ( im presuming it was white) was probrably just a saturated air / oil seperator spewing off some oil enriched air ( a common occuance) this comes from the oil scavenge system on jet engines when oil seperator is overwhelmed by a surge of oil/air and vent it off. no big deal.
