Man Locked In Cargo Hold Flies To Philly

When I used to work on the ramp, I never had a situation like this. I'm wondering did anyone ever have a free ride on board because they were locked in? This could've easily turned bad if the cargo hold was not pressurized. Any other funny stories while working on the ramp? He smoked a cigarette as soon as he got out lol.
Truly miss working there but now I am flying the damn things so I'm still happy.  bigthumbsup

I know a Friend who was loading an IL76 on the Tarmec at Mumbai .After Loading was completed He went in to check the Lashings.When he turned around e noticed the Cargo Door was closing.He tried calling out to the people outside,but the noise outside covered his yell.Finally the doors were closed.
The mistake was that the Grd staff did not do a Staff count.
It was only later they realised he was missing & informed the Destination ie Bangkok.
Meanwhile our Friend was in total panic in the Dark,held on to the Lashings with his life & even peed in his pants in panic.
When the Aircraft landed at Bangkok,he was shivering with the Cold [Guess no heat in cargo deck].They took him to a Hospital for a Medical check,gave him a Sponsored rest & a few days break at Bangkok before Flying him back commercial to Mumbai.

Didn't happen in the cargo hold but I was once almost left back in the cabin. I was in the flight deck to compare data with the pilots and the ground staff decided to pull the stairs away already. I had to laugh when I wanted to leave the plane and I told the F/A that I have nothing against joining them to the canary islands, the only problem would be that I had to do the push-back... In the meantime the dodos on the ground realised I was missing, so the stairs were brought back again. Too bad, would have been my first flight on a 757-300...

Same thing happened to me in 1999.Was discussing a Snag rectification & after comming out realised the Step ladder was driven away.Since it was a B737,I jumped from the door on to the Tarmec & went to commence Pushback.
Saved some precious time.

We had one in ANC. A loader decided to take a nap in the back of the main deck during loading of a 74. Needless to say the aircraft departed to HKG and a couple of hours over the Pacific, the loader alerted the crew of his presence. The crew alerted dispatch which had to alert customs that an undocumented extra person was on board. It was too late to turn back so thankfully there wasn't much turmoil upon arrival. The Ramper was not allowed to depart the aircraft in HKG.

Not Approved def.Also since the Step ladder was not Arriving,Not wanting to risk a delay.
I was told the same thing by another Senior AME later that I should not have Jumped,but waited,cause an Injury would be considered an Incident.But I was then a younger guy who was quite Athletic & used to those heights.But I know I was wrong.
If it happened again,I would not opt for the same,only because I realise that an Unwanted Incident is the last one needs.
I guess We learn with time  Smile

It was very ironic to hear of this yesterday. I was standing in the cargo bin of one of our CRJ's, waiting for the bags to come out. So I was pretty much just reading the grafitti on the walls, entertaining myself for a couple minutes. I began to wonder just what would happen if I were to get shut in back here, and fly to Cincinnati. After the flight, we were all sitting in our ops room, and my supervisor brought up this story of the US ramp agent flying to PHL in the cargo bin. I just found it ironic that I had been thinking about it several minutes earlier. I decided that if it were me, in a CRJ, I'd flip on the light, and break down that little emergency access panel between the lav and cargo bin.

Glad to hear he was ok!

All is lighted most of the time, but the front of the cargo hold is always lighted - it can be a little cold - but he would have been able to get to the front of the aircraft either up the sides or over the top of the cargo.

Even if the lights are off at the back of the aircraft, you can see the lights glowing from the front of the cargo bay where the ground engineers and loadmasters are sitting cooking their dinner....

How the hell did he get trapped? - I think he is telling campfire stories.... Even after the loading is complete, the IL-76 has to load its own pushback bar through the rear door (using the onboard cranes) which takes a good 5 mins..... The crews are very protective of their equipment, especially somewhere like India...

Good that I did not consider doing this while being stuck in the cabin of the 757... Considering that a F/A died a few weeks ago falling out of an A320, for sure a dangerous hight. Would be ok if planes would park on grass though.  drunk
