I read all the time about LHR, NRT and FRA being packed to the gills all the time with very few slots available to anyone, but I haven't heard anyone mentioning that EWR and JFK are packed out as well, is this true?

I know that EWR and JFK have terrible rush hours in the morning and late afternoon, but do they have extra slots available for new carriers throughout the day? jetBlue and their cohorts seem to be able to grow at their NYC bases without too much haggling. Correct?

Though they have terrible rush hours during parts of the day, and JFK/PANYNJ does have to carefully manage that airport's afternoon/early-evening movements... neither are officially slot restricted.

In fact, early morning... you can essentially go bowling on JFK's runways. Only the odd Delta, JetBlue, and Latin arrivals/departures.

EWR is a mess in the evening hours. I experienced that many times in recent weeks.

Neither EWR or JFK is slot restricted. The only two airports that are slot-restricted for capacity (rather than at the whims of the NIMBY's) within the United States are LGA and DCA.

I think this is not totally correct. Of course there are no available slots at JFK and EWR at some times. Perhaps you can get slots at these airports but I think not at any time.

There are no airport slots but there are ATC slots for arrivals into NYC area. They cannot allow unlimited amount of aircraft to enter the airspace over NYC. And the amount of the arriving aircraft is significantly influenced by the weather (aka yesterday).

JFK is really busy around 7PM as most of the flights to Europe are all departing around then!
