I always thought it would be Northwest who would be the first operator of the Airbus family of aircraft (passenger airlines only) into BHM. We already get a UPS A-300. However, it appears that U.S. Airways will have two daily A-319's into BHM from CLT effective 5/9/05. Hopefully U.S. can hang around a little while so we can have plenty of time to observe these beauties on the ramp. Guess they are really winding down their 737 fleet.

I take it these are replacing the 733's?? Very surprised, US seems to be downgrading BHM at every opportunity. At one time US had 5-6 mainline flights per day, now down to two right, with quite a few RJ's thrown in.

Anyhow will certainly be a welcome sight...

Yes, this comes straight from the U.S. Airways website. Apparently these 319's are replacing the 733's. The 319's show a total of 120 seats and the 733's show 126 so it is actually a seat decrease. The 319's sit up higher though and I think the U.S. paint job really makes them look good.

U.S. dropped those 5 or 6 mainlines shortly after they got rid of the Fokker fleet. They tried 5 or 6 737's per day for a period but apparently it was too much. They eventually went all CRJ/ERJ. Only around 6 or 8 months ago did mainline return with 1 737 per day for the 7am departure to CLT. Eventually they added a noon 737 to CLT as well and now they are swapping with the 319's.

I did some part-time work with US at BHM in the mid-90's and I remember seeing MD-80's, 737-200, 300, DC-9-30, and the Fokkers. There were 4 mainline to CLT, 2 Fokkers to BWI and several B-1900 to JAX/TPA. Even with the WN competition to BWI the F-100's were always packed with pax and bags and made for a miserable flight (for me anyway..)

Always nice to see a fellow BHM'er around these parts...

Definitely good to see another Birminghamer on here. I too worked at BHM part time in the early 90's. I was a PT ramper for Delta before they subcontracted everything out.
