Maybe somebody can shed some light on this for me? I was on my way to the SAT airport for my departure back to IAH and noticed a Virgin 747-400 under a maintenance hangar. I thought Virgin was trying to buy more 747's, why would this thing be all the way out here in Texas if they weren't trying to sell it??

They actually do a significant amount of maintenance in SAT. I am not sure if it is cheaper there or what the exact circumstances, but I had started a similar thread about this last fall after I went to SAT. Imagine my surprise up landing to see a Saudi MD-11 on the ground in SAT! Hopefully, someone from the area can fill us in with some more info.

Are you sure it was a -400?
Air Atlanta Europe are in the process of retiring 2 B747-200s that had been in operation on behalf of Virgin Atlantic. G-VBEE has already been retired and was ferried to San Antonio in February. G-VSSS will continue in service until May. See this thread.

I was under the impression that the MD-11 was going to Fed Ex or UPS...I was in SAT in October '04 and the Saudi plane was there then. I seem to remember a thread a while back stating it was going to one of the two above companies....I just can't remember which one.

The VS 747 has the titles removed and the paint is in bad shape. As stated it is in fact a -200 and I don't think it's going back to VS. Also, the Saudi MD-11 just landed again in SAT yesterday and John Travolta's 707 has been back for a couple weeks now.
