Name That Plane!

Yesterday (Thursday) my roommate saw an "MD-80" departing from FAI about 4pm. He called it an MD-80 but in reality it could be almost any rear engined jet. He said that it had blue on the fuselage, possibly a cheatline, possibly wording. Also, it had a blue and yellow tail. He is adamant that it wasn't AS.
He also said that it was loud, which is consistent with the MD-80. (AS's MD-80 is significantly louder then a 737 when directly over my house.)

Does anybody know what this could be and what it was doing in FAI? I would assume that it is on a delivery flight to Asia.

Blue fuselage? Blue and yellow on the tail? Sounds like a YX MD-80 or 717 to me. They're the only airline I know of with that color combination.

It wasn't a blue fuselage, but either a blue cheatline or blue writing. I think it sounds a little like Allegiant, but they shouldn't be anywhere near FAI.

That's consistent with RG's livery, but they don't operate MD-80s. Is your friend sure of the aircraft type/size?

If in any possibility he confused an MD-11 with an MD-80 (unlikely IMHO, but I don't know whether he has "trained" eyes or not), it could have been a delivery flight for VarigLog (logistics). They are supposed to get up to three MD-11's this year.

Just a thought..

He doesn't have the best plane identification skills, but he wouldn't confuse an MD-11. He just said it was an MD-80, but it could have been any rear engined plane. It could be a CRJ or ERJ or something like that.

The colors work out, but I'd be very surprised to see a YX plane anywhere near FAI anytime soon.

B-52s don't take off. They scare the ground away.
