Sun Country Flight Question

I flew SY back in Oct. of 1998 from MSP to LAS. I was just wondering if anyone might know what plane this would have been. I am thinking it was probably a DC-10. If I remember right, the seating configuration was 2-3-2. I didn't know very much about aviation back then, but just from the pictures I have been able to find on A.net from SY from that time, I am guessing it was probably a DC-10. I just thought it would be cool if I could find out what plane I flew on. I found a luggage tag which I believe was from the return trip which was 10-04-98 and I think we flew MSP to LAS on 10-01-98. Also on that tag it said SY 72, so I am thinking it may have been fl#72. If anyone could help me find what kind of plane I was on, or even better yet help me find the registration#, that would be greatly appreciated. Or if you could just tell me where I can find this info that would be fine too. Thanks for any help.

You know, if you don't mind me piggybacking onto this thread, I'd like to ask a similar question. I flew from DFW to Grand Cayman on Sun Country in 1994. Would that have been on a 727? For the life of me, I cannot remember the seating arrangement on that plane, and I was too young to care/know any better.

SY used to fly DC10s and 727s, they have since retired them for the 737-800

Feel free to piggyback all you want. I think I was in the same shape you were in. That was my first flight and I was on a big plane and it was the coolest thing I had ever experienced. The reason I remember the seating configuration is because on the return trip my brother and I were sitting in the middle and there were two pilots sitting by a window seat reading a newspaper so we asked them if they would mind switching seats so we could have a window seat, which they gladly did. Now I really wish I would have been smart enough to get the reg#, but back then I didn't even know planes had registration numbers.  banghead

The thing is, it doesn't matter for me either way: that Sun Country flight is the only time I can know that I flew on a 727 or a DC-10. Of course, I just don't know which! I want to try to run it down so I can get on the other type before it becomes a near-impossibility.

I'm kicking myself at the moment because for several years I was rather fastidious about collecting regs, and now I don't even collect flight numbers anymore. Grr... I know I'll regret this someday, but when 90% of your flights take place on an MD-80, you eventually stop caring which MD-80 you're flying on Big grin

Flight 72 would have been the DC-10.

The two digit flight numbers were almost exclusively DC-10's unless something unique was going on. In other words I rarely saw that on a 727.

I just checked my pocket calendars from that year. I was working at DTW at the time and not riding along. So I didn't keep any ship numbers or flight info. Had to do it for per-diem purposes when flying.

A few days before the dates you listed, I was riding N152SY MSP-VCV-NKT-DTW where I stayed to work for a few weeks. Kinda cool to look back at all the trips...

I do show N153SY lost the #3 engine on takeoff at DTW a week after the date you listed. Worked a lot of OT on that day so had to keep track of the time.

Our DC-10's back then were 151, 152, 153, 154SY All were DC-10-15 they came from Mexicana and Aeromexico.
Our earlier DC-10 were DC-10-10 that belonged to Western Airlines. After the DL/WA merger DL dumped them as they had L-1011.
SAS carrier Scanair had them and we leased from Scanair. They were 571, 572, 573 SC, & 908WA. We went to the -15 because it was a hot rod plane.

SCXmechanic can back me on this, one of the -15 did a military flight from I think MSP-Ft Hood TX, to Guam, and back. When it got back whole sheets of paint were missing due to poor prep. MX just about had a fit when she pulled up. There was more silver showing then white paint. Plane went through a thunderstorm, what a sight. Needless to say it had to be repainted.

Thanks a lot for all the help. If that was indeed 153 that I was on it was a good thing I flew when I did instead of a week later or I might have had a very interesting first flight. I really appreciate all the help. Doesn't the FAA keep records of all commercial flights? I thought maybe I could somehow track down the registrtion of the plane I was on. If they do is this information available online?

I was.  yes 

On 10-1-1998, you flew flight 71 on N154SY from MSP to LAS (if that was the date you flew to LAS). You were off the ground at 13:18Z which would have been 7:18 AM. You landed in LAS at 16:02Z (you can do the LAS math for time conversion).

On 10-4-1998 you flew flight 72 once again on N154SY from LAS to MSP. You took off at 01:07Z and landed at 03:36Z.

As you may have read, N154SY was a DC-10-15.


N844AA, if you could get me more specific dates, I may be able to find the info you are looking for. To look through a whole year would take me forever!

Yes.

Try bls.gov and look for advanced flight statstics.

However, I don't think they kept track of charter flights.

N844AA, I show 727's in 6/04 flying from DFW to GCM. So, most likely that's what you flew on.

SY used 727's from Dan Air, and Sterling. We now lease 737-800 from Transavia in AMS, every winter.
