A380 And 75 Ft Taxiways FAA Rule

The FAA has issued a 5 year exception for the A380 to operate off of 75ft taxiways rather than the recommended 100ft taxiways. The conditions of this are:

1. Proposed A380 taxi routes must be designatied by airport authorities

2. A380 taxi speed is 15mph or less

3. Taxiing Camera System (TCS) must be used

4. Adequate taxiway centerline lighting must exist

5. Overall taxiway width (including shoulders) must be 180 feet

6. Jet blast must be minimized

7. Repeated excursions from taxiways will result in revocation of this rule.

Questions:

-How wide is the gear footprint of the A380?

-What is the turning radius of the A380 for a 90 degree turn, will the 75ft taxiway be adequate?

I can't remember off the top of my head what the turning radius is but I remember the 380 will have problems doing a 180 on a 150'strip so no chance on 75'.

There are also restrictions at some airports regarding other aircraft taxing and using runway at same time due to clearance problems.

All these things can be corrected if enough money is thrown at them.

My question is: Who is going to pay?

227 ft - 70 degrees of tiller.
166.4 ft (Differential braking and differential thrust) - 70 degrees tiller
156 ft (Minimum turn using 78 degrees of tiller and differential braking and differential thrust).

Do your figures take into account can't use outer engines if no prepared blast area.
Also measurements for obstacle and lined up aircraft clearance are taken from the centreline. So needs additional clearances from centreline to turn, if turning radius deviates from centreline.

I assume these are for 180 degree turnarounds.

But will it be able to make a 90 degree turn from one 75 ft taxiway onto another?

Yes.
The radius of the inside corner will just have to be a maximum of 85 ft. (A380 AIRPLANE CHARACTERISTICS 90° Turn – Taxiway to Taxiway A380-800/800F Models).
