I am interested in finding out how often aircraft are struck by lightning. This following an interesting story from my father, who arrived in Montreal today from London. He was sitting in the jumpseat during takeoff from LHR when the A330-300 was struck in the nose by a lightning bolt. Apparently it sounded like a shotgun been fired. The sound then passed through the cabin and freaked out most of the passengers. A stewardess came into the cockpit advising the pilots of the uneasiness. The captain then made an announcement as to what had happened.
Does this type of situation ever result in damage to the aircraft?

Per Boeing Aero issue #10 a lightning strike occurs on a commercial airplane about once every 3,000 flt hrs or about once a year.. Damage may occur to the aircraft skin as well as electrical and electronic systems. Aircraft are designed with lightning protective measures including lightning strips, arresters and diverter dischargers to name a few.
