Wow. Didn't see this one coming.

CO Express will offer twice weekly ERJ service from IAH to Flores. Flores is the closest airport to the Mayan ruins at Tikal. Flights will depart IAH on wednesdays and saturdays at 6:40 and arrive at 9:05 pm. Return flights will depart Flores at 7:45 am and arrive at IAH at noon.

Service is scheduled to begin on June 18th pending governmental approval.

This new service will mean that CO will offer flights to 11 Central American cities.

Wow, if those RJ's could make it any further down they'd be announcing new service to Cusco soon.

Congrats to Guatemala.

Flores is FRS.

Prensa Libre (Guatemalan news paper in Spanish) published a story about it today.

It sounds cool, but the airport will need remodeling for security purposes. It does sound a little uncomfortable to fly that amount of time in an ERJ.

nice and spacious airports in need of new airlines and flights... GUA or FRS anyone?... anyone at all?

its only a 3:20 minute flight

I was at Flores last summer visiting the ruins at Tikal. We flew a Let 410 from SUA from TAG (Guatemala Air Transport).

Needless to day, the airport in Fores will have to be considerably outfitted. Part of the terminal is outside, there's no x-ray security screening (an airport employee simply glanced into my carry-on bag), and when a single Tikal Jets DC-9 is preparing to depart, the entire terminal is jam packed. Additionally the airport's perimeter is not secure. I saw several groups of people taking a shortcut across the runway to get to the main road to Flores.

This is why as I said, the government has to remodel a lot FRS. They will have to secure the area to fit standards. Ultimately build a new building, nothing fancy but usable.

Flores is a beautiful town! this is incredible news, CO is very impressive with these small destinations in Mexico and Central America.

At the same time, I would hate to see Flores be suddenly overrun by tourists, but that's life. This could be the beginning of major commercialization there. Up till now it's been more of an off-the-beaten-path eco-tourist destination. Part of Flores's charm is that it feels so remote and it's relatively hard to get there. That will probably change. I flew to FRS from GUA in November '02 on Tikal Jets.

FRS already gets occasional 757s from those expensive private round-the-world tours that cost something like $40K per person. Forget the names of the tour companies, or the charter airlines, but I saw one of them there. A company based out of Manchester, anyone know the name? So they do get irregular 757 service, so obviously the facilities at FRS aren't that bad.

That's a reasonable question. Flores is a fairly small town, and tourist friendly, and there are transport facilities at the airport (shuttles, cabs) to take you to your hotel. The airport is about 2km from the town center. 9pm shouldn't be a problem.

I guess they don't fly to SDQ because they are taking advantage of CM's network.

Unlikely. It is because there is barely a market between Santo Domingo and the US outside of the East Coast. Even further, there is virtually no market to SDQ (and STI) outside of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York City, and Boston. It isn't a tourist market, it is a VFR market that relies on VFR traffic that is almost entirely concentrated in those areas.

Here's a thought I've had since hearing about CO's service to FRS.

Flores is a nice town, but it's tiny. Really, all that's there is Tikal and Lake Peten. It is very inaccessible to the rest of Guatemala, or just about anywhere else for that matter. Yes, you can take what I think is an 8 hour bus ride to Belize, and about the same to GUA/Antigua - someone correct me if I'm wrong - but these are on uncomfortable "chicken buses," i.e. retired American school buses, with lots of very local traffic.

I just don't see how there's enough of a market for nonstops to this place - a tiny town, a lake, and some ruins. While Tikal is great, it has nowhere near the draw of, say, Macchu Picchu.

And more importantly, you can't get anywhere else from there. If you want to "do Guatemala," you fly to GUA, not FRS.

#19 Maybe CO is looking for the potential weekend holiday packages to FRS or double destination Guatemala: in GUA, out FRS or v.v.?
Flying directly to/from FRS will save tourists time.
Haven't heard all those complaints of travellers trying to get to CUZ that have to spend nights in/out in LIM because the lack of reliable connecting flights to/from CUZ?
Kind of the same situation with FRS

There's a lot more to visit in the area than just Tikal....

Although I agree that the airport needs major remodeling in order to serve more international traffic.

Feed. The route won't live on O/D; it needs to leave late enough for connections to arrive at IAH.

Well if you look at it in another way, arriving at FRS is no different than arriving at GUA. You get there and instead of wasting a night in GUA you start at where you want to be, then you'll have to fly to the rest of the places but if you did it the other way around there is no difference, besides it's still cool to think that there will be another way to get to Guatemala and take some traffic away from GUA who is packet, seriously, there are no slots left.
