Emirates will be launching daily service to Egypt's 2nd largest city, Alexandria starting Sunday, May 15.

Flights will operate to Alexandria's newer Borg el Arab (HBE) airport instead of the older El Nohza (ALY) airport.

All flights will operate on Emirates' single A310-300, A6-EKL, equipped in a two-class configuration with 21 Business Class seats and 177 Economy Class seats for a total of 198 seats.

Are there any more cities in Egypt to which EK might start regular service? I do'nt know much about the cities in the region, but I am always curious as to how EK will deploy their ever-increasing fleet!

Also, isn't it bizarre that EK flies one, single A310? It seems to me that this must be a soruece of considerable inefficiency since it would require (some) unique spare parts, and presumably several flight crews dedicated to just this one plane? Am I correct in assuming that this is EK's oldest plane? I do'nt mean to steer the discussion off course too much, but I do find this fascinating.

Next flight.... who knows.

I heard somewhere that the A310 costs are entirely funded by Airbus, as they made guarantees that the A330s would be able to operate into all Emirates cities, but it turned out that one destination could not be served with the A330 - hence the need to an A310 in service. Anyone care to elaborate?

EK also has ordered 3 A 310-300 freighters which shall be delivered to them soon or already are...dunno for sure 100%...but soon they will have a fleet of 4 A 310s so it shouldnt be a big maintainance problem as one might make it out to be.

The A310 is going to be retired soon, but for now they cannot afford to - they don't have enough aircraft as it is. Yup, this is their oldest plane, as you can see it is the only EK aircraft left wearing the old livery.

The A310 was about to be returned but the ALY opportunity was just right for the aircraft so EK extended the lease.

BA...was planning to get home and post the news...good I did a search first.
Here are the details and some more updates from EK.

KL was supposed to be retired in April this year but the decision has been deferred and as per plans now it will be retired next FY.

EK is desperately short of aircrafts now.

And yes, they have placed orders for 310F. Should be entering service next year.

EK schedules are already a cause of concern for us working at DXB airport. And this new flight is again at the end of the morning peak.

By the way the first of the 77Ws...BA and CTA (Switzerland)">BB have already been delivered and are in service.

Cheers!!

Do you mean there are too many flights centred around the morning peak for the EK staff to handle? Well thank goodness a new terminal devoted to EK is being constructed!

Definitely good news for Alex! Over the last few weeks quite a few carriers have announced new services and increased existing frequency to the city:

-Austrian Airlines: launching a new VIE-HBE-VIE service with 4x weekly A319 flights in May.
-Yemenia: launching a new SAH-ALY-SAH service with 2x weekly B738/B73G flights (IY602/603) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Flights start in June.
-Air Arabia: Adding a second daily flight from SHJ with A320s.
-Gulf Air: Starting a new 3x weekly A320 BAH-HBE-BAH service.
-Olympic Airways: doubling current flights from 2 to 4x weekly (ATH-ALY-ATH) this summer.
-Lufthansa: upgrading some FRA-ALY flights from A319 to A320 over the summer.
-Kuwait Airways: increasing KWI-ALY flights from 1x weekly to 3x weekly A320 flights.
-Saudi Arabian Airline: increasing flights out of JED and RUH to ALY with MD-90s

Egyptair are also increasing Middle Eastern services and starting new ALY-SSH flights.

EK will only be the second carrier at Alexandria's Borg Al Arab Airport (HBE) after BA, but EK had no choice since ALY's runway is too short (largest aircraft is the A320) and considering their smallest aircraft is the A310, HBE is the only viable choice. The A310 will be substituted for the A332 during the peak summer period.

MS will also increase their own ALY-DXB service from 1 to 3x weekly A320 flights this summer.

EK will also increase capacity on their DXB-CAI route by upgrading EK923 from a B772 to a B773 (and about time too!!!). MS recently introduced a new 2x weekly SSH-DXB A320 service.

Yes Luxor. It's third largest city, major tourist attraction and largest economy in Upper Egypt so its the obvious next choice, but it will take 'some' time for EK to get the required clearance to operate the DXB-LXR route. QR doubled their 3x weekly A320 service from DOH to LXR this week to 6x weekly flights and KU added an extra flight from KWI.

ASW (fourth largest city but with a large surrounding population) and SSH (major tourist resort and expanding) are possible destinations.
