Northwest Needs To Retire DC-9's

It is time for Northwest to retire all of their DC-9's. Their have been several mechanical problems within the airlines DC-9 fleet. The airline needs to look into investing into the newer Boeing 717.

From what I have heard, Northwest plans to keep the DC-9s around for a while longer, perhaps even a long while longer. I had noticed that some of their DC-9s have received refurbished cabins and look quite nice, too bad Northwest otherwise is not so nice!

As for maint. problems, every airplane in every fleet has maint. problems, from NWAs DC-9-10s to UAs 777-200s! As long as they are maintained they can last virtually forever.

I also have heard that NW has refurbished the DC-9s and that theoretically they could fly for 30 more years. I however think that NW will buy A318s and more A319s to replace the DC-9s in the next 3-7 years. NW may also look into the Avro RJ-100 sooner because they own Mesaba's RJ-85s. Another plane I think NW might look into is the Bombardier BRJ-X. I don't think NW will buy the 717s because (1.) the 717s have RR engines and NW currently only operates GE/CFM and PW engines (2.) NW probably wouldn't replace DC-9s with newer DC-9s (B717-200 is the DC-9-95-30) when they could fly their current DC-9s for about 30 more years.

Northwest plans to keep there DC-9s for about 5 more years. They plan to get the A318 to replace them. Northwest did look into the 717 but showed no interests like most airlines including British Airways.

Although the DC-9 and 717 look similar, thats where the similarities end. Its like comparing a 747-100 to a 747-600X! The 717 would fit nicely in their fleet as the DC-9s fly mostly on the east coast/southern areas, all pretty short flights.

The A318 would fit in the fleet because of commonality, but it is more of a longer range aircraft, where the A319 and A320 fly the routes. Although, without a hub out west, the A318 would be nice for opening up services to smaller western cities.

Wow! If "several mechanical problems in the fleet" constitutes a solid reason for an airline ridding itself of a type of aircraft,we'd all be riding trains and busses. If an airline deems the cost of maintaining an aircraft to be disproportionally high in relation to the revenue produced,then it's a valid issue. Just what A/C type _doesn't_ require unscheduled maintainance? I got the chance to fly a few years ago on one of NWA's refurbished "nines". Beautiful interior. As far as John Q Public is concerned,it may have well been fresh from the plant in Long Beach.

If gas prices keep going up, NW might replace the DC-9 quicker. Then they'll probably put A318s on some of the routes, regional jets on other routes.

They should consider going for the 717 (MD-95), it is from the same family as the DC-9/MD-80 with a modern up to date digital cockpit.

Not to start the government subsidy debate again, but seriously, is there any financial benefit or incentive for a US carrier to purchase Boeing equipment? Maybe tax breaks? If not, should there be?

I dont understand this, how come everyone says NW is the only airline with old planes, hell, look at united they got plenty of run down 737-200s, and I dont hear anyone complaining about them, everyone is like United is the best and blah blah blah, so does an airlines fleet age determine whether it is good or not, I dont think so.

You couldn't be more wrong.

The -9 is a fantastic aircraft and NW, unlike some other carriers, really take care of them inside and out. They will be around many more years to come.

They will not be replaced by either 318's or 717's--more 319's are the best bet but not for some time yet. Seating cap. for the 319 is roughly comparable to that of the -9 40/50 series.

The 717 (MD-95) is not a DC-9-95-30, the last one to hold the DC-9 type was the MD-87. It IS true that the 717 manages to hold on to the DC-9 PILOT type rating though, and is said that a pilot can convert over in a few days. This would be a great plane for Northwest, as it is more fuel efficient than the A318, and designed for the short hops the NW DC-9s currently travel on. Nothing wrong with a new engine if they buy it in great quantity.

I know that the last official DC-9 was the DC-9-87 but since MDC kept going in order with the MD-88 after the DC-9-87 one could argue that theoretically the MD-95-30 (B717-200) could be considered the DC-9-95-30 in a logical numerical sequence even though the 717 is not officially a DC-9 is is the newest member of the DC-9/MD-80/MD-90 family of aircraft. I don't see NW buying the 717 because of the RR engines. NW could also get better deals with Airbus if they ordered the A318 plus the A318/A319/A320 family would be cheeper to operate than two different AC types the B717-200 and the A319/A320. NW would be more apt to order the 717 if the 717-100 and 717-300 were offered as to make the 717 a "family" of aircraft. This would allow NW to have an 85 to 125 seat AC family similar to the 124 to 150 seat A319/A320 family. As long as Boeing doesn't launch the 717-100 and 717-300 I can't see NW ordering it. I see the lack of a 717 family as the major reason Boeing isn't getting many 717 orders.

I'm on NW flights at least once a week, usually on DC-9s. The new interiors are great, both up-front and in steerage. In fact, I'll take a ride on a -9 any day over one of their DC-10 30s & 40s, which are more cramped, have poor carry-on space and no individual air flows. But that's another story.

The DC-9 is a great a/c and continues to perform well with all the airlines that still operate the type. NW is smart to keep them up to date.

I am unable to understand the economics of scrapping a 100+ fleet of older, paid for DC-9s in favor of new 30-50 million jets that require new crew training, new mx training, new facilities, spare parts etc. After operating the DC-9s as long as NW has, I suspect they make good money off utilizing older a/c that were paid for long ago. Eventually of course they will have to replace them with something and I predict (and anybody can comment on this) that Boeing will, out of customer demand develop the 717 into a "family" of a/c like the DC-9/ MD-80. They have done it with every other type they make and there are alot of operators of DC-9s and even more of MD-80s that are very pleased with the economics and customer satisfaction of this type. I can see TWA, NWA, Delta (maybe, but they are already going the way of the crappy 737NG), SAS, SwissAir among others being interested in a larger/smaller 717. If they can possibly justify the 757-300 (which nobody seems to want) then they could justify a further development of the 717.

WHo could ask for more than a type of a/c that performs well for over 30 years and still has a number of years left? I think airlines these days are pretty hasty to replace 10-20 year old a/c, its puzzling.

I hope that Northwest goes for the 717-200. I don't like middle seats. with the 717 there is only on middle seat. I think with the A318 the config is 3x3. I hope Northwest can speed up the retirment of the DC-9. But first get rid of the DC-10s and replace them with A330s,A340s, 767s or 777s. I hope they do it this year.

The dispatch rating for NW's DC-9's is 98%, the highest in the fleet. Who cares how old they are, they are maintained extremely well. I would much rather ride coach in a DC-9 than in most 737 Cattle Cars. Yes, I know the airlines are responsible for the seating layouts, but most amusement park rides have more seating room than the 737's I've been on.

Read up on the 717, you may be surprised at what airline helped design this aircraft. (Hint: Hubs at MSP,DTW,MEM)

Everyone knows that the DC-9s need to be replaced. A318s I think would not be good replacements. The 717 can fly every continental US city from NW's hub. So the A318's range doesnt matter. So since it is heavier and less economical than the 717, NW should deffinately replace the DC-9s with 717s. The sooner the better. I know that here in MSP the media has brought up the topic of NW having a old fleet. Most people asscoiate old with broken or worn down so in turn people dont like to fly on DC-9s. They are loud too. The 717s will bring lower maitenence costs to NW and keep the reliability up in the 98% range or higher.

I like the DC9 and hope they hang on to them for years to come. Same with TWA. In a way this keeps Republic Airlines and Ozark Airlines alive and flying.
