It's been awhile since I flew with AA or United to and from the New York/New Jersey area to LHR. How are the two airlines now in service, planes, ontime, baggage etc. I think that AA still flies 767-300, A300, and MD-11 between JFK-LHR and EWR-LHR. United flies 767-300 or the 777-200 on both routes. Which one is good and why. Tell me your experiences. Good and bad as well as how the aircraft is like. I haven't flown on them in a few years now on these routes. Instead it's Virgin, Air India, Kuwait Airways and Gulf Airways. Before these carriers I flew with Pan Am and TWA when the still serviced LHR until the early 1990s.

This doesnt directly answer your question, but it may be of interest to you. I flew on an AA 767-300er to Paris-ORY last summer and it was very pleasant. The seats were comfortable, the food was good and the service was commendable. I wasn't very excited about flying AA to europe, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I flew EWR-LHR on a United 772 in December and they were fine. United Int'l is far superior to United domestic and the service standard is good. Unfortunately the 777 still had the old J class seats not the newer seats which i had sampled the week before on a 744 from MEL-LAX but otherwise they were fine. If I had a criticism of UA, it would be that they upgrade too much meaning J class travellers are inevitably surrounded by upgraded economy passengers and there are insufficient toilets for J class on their 777s.

I flew roundtrip from JFK to LHR last September on AA. The JFK-LHR trip was on an A300-600 (N14065) and the return on a 767-200 (N315AA). The A300 has the new economy class seats with adjustable headrests and PTV's. The 762 has the old style seats and no PTV's. Overall speaking, two rather uneventful flights. Although the level of service is not the very best I've experienced, it certainly qualified as nice and decent.

The only problem was that I was stuck in the middle seat on the return flight on the 762. Frankly speaking, it doesn't matter whether the seating layout is 2-5-2, 3-3-3, 2-4-2, 3-4-3, or 2-3-2. If you're sandwiched between two strangers, it sucks - period!

Haven't sampled anything from UA for 14 years, so I've no idea how they are today.

Currently, AA is flying the 762/3, and AB6 on JFK-LHR and the AB6 on EWR-LHR. Coming soon, the 777 will replace an Airbus on 1 JFK flight. I've flown both directions on the upgraded A300s. They were really great. I enjoyed the flights, and was pleasantly surprised by AA's Int'l service.

I have always found AA's 763s to be some of the most comfortable a/c around. Getting of a UA 744 onto an AA763 was a great experience.

I have never flown American internationally (never flown internationally at all, actaully), but I can add three things. First, American is installing the new seats in their 767s, and that has probably been done by now. Secondly, depending on when you are going, American may have the expanded economy leg room by then. While they are not modifying the three class international fleet until domestic revovations are complete, United is not installing Economy Plus in their international aircraft at all, if you even qualify for an economy plus seat. Fianlly, I have flown American's 767s on American Flagship Service flights, which are very similar to their International Flagship Service flights. The trips have always been very pleasant (all JFK to the west coast and vice-versa), and the aircraft are very comfortable. I haven't been on the A-300 yet, but I will be taking one in May from JFK to Santo Domingo (2-class, not 3 for this particular trip.)

The 2-class A300s are rather dissapointing. The seats I've flown with are the old style. F class is a diminuative 16 seats, while they pack 251 in the back. Ouch, try getting upgraded with those odds flying a 7am JFK-MIA!

The old seats on the busses are of different shape than other types of the fleet, and aren't particularally comfortable.

Let us know what you think!

In case you change your mind, AA runs a 3-class 762 daily on both JFK-MIA/SJU. It is pretty easy to get a Biz-class seat on these flights if you don't mind connecting to SJU.

I wouldn't mind flying through SJU, but I am travelling with a friend who will be using an employee pass from my dad. The passes that we give to friends limit backtracking to those backtracks neccessary to reach the destination, so he can't go JFK-SJU-SDQ, as that is a backtrack. It would also end up costing him considerable more. No big deal, so far... The 3 non-stops all have empty first class cabins as of now, and the A-300s are getting the new seats. I don't know if they've finished that yet or not, but hopefuly they have. I think that my return to San Diego will be routed for a nicer trip... RSW-MIA-JFK (767) - LAX (767 American Flagship Service) - SAN.

Purdue Arrow is right. And I'm persuaded that he will continue to use American like me for many more years. The 767's are being reconfigured with the new seats. I think that they should be done with most the 767 fleet by now, they've been working on this for about a year. I'll see tomorrow, I fly on a 767-300 from Chicago to Brussels, if it still has the old seats I'll tell you. The Super 80's are also reconfigured with the new seats. I flew last December on an American 767-200 from EWR to LHR, it had the new interiors, the flight was almost empty and the service was very good. It was a very nice flight, the approach to LHR at sunrise was fabulous.
You must know that American no longer flies MD-11's from JFK to LHR, they do fly however the 767-200/300 and the A300 needless to repeat.
