According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, AirTran will announce service to RIC tomorrow with flights to ATL and PHL (and MCO later on). See AirTran cleared for landing for details.

Good for RIC.. it has been highly underservedfor a while now. To get flights to ATL, PHL, and MCO is really great. I see FL pulled a move similar to CLT there.. glad some places are getting more than just one destination.. now if they could perhaps go to some of their current destinations and add some more..

But CONGRATULATIONS to Richmond.. They will have AirTran and jetBlue (eventually).. not bad.. not bad at all! Who says they need WN?

Another high fare haven bites the dust! Guess who's the largest carrier there right now? The blows from the low fare carriers keep raining down on a certain BK carrier if you ask me...

Congratulations RIC! May your air fares decrease and your passenger numbers increase, ten fold! (Like what happened at PNS)

Yes, please! Come on FL add more destinations out of cities you already serve  Smile

Great news...Way to go FL!. I wish them continued growth and success. It will be interesting to watch the battle between FL and Southwest.

I have not heard of any cutbacks at DAY. Do you have a link?

Some nonstops to Florida are being cut in May...probably just seasonal.

Actually, this is yet another return city for FL. They served RIC out of MCO (And also had RIC-ORF service) at the time of the merger. So what former Valujet/AirTran cities will see the return of service to next? SDF? JAN? CMH? CVG? MOB?

AirTran is adding a third trip from BWI to Dayton in May. I would guess that the Florida service cuts are seasonal, they have also cut some flights from BWI and PHL to Florida for the summer.

So Valujet never served RIC..just the original AirTran? Is this correct?

Even if FL does already serve Newport News, the combined Tidewater area and Richmond is a pretty populous area and there should probably be enough traffic to justify service to both airports.

At 80 miles, RIC is further away from Newport News than say Lansing (LAN) is from Grand Rapids (GRR) or Kalamazoo.

No, ValuJet never served RIC.

The original AirTran served RIC. When we (ValuJet) bought and became AirTran, we kept RIC, eventually serving it from both ATL and MCO with DC9s.

Yes Yes Yes !!!

The largest airline market in America that has neither an airline hub nor an LCC now gets FL!

This is wonderful news, and RIC is a wonderful market!

I actually wanted FL to come here more than B6.

I like WN even more than FL, but now that FL is here I dont think WN wants to come here anymore.

Yes, most likely seasonal cuts to florida. FL has several seasonal flts into PHL that will be cut in the summer, 3rd daily FLL, 2nd daily TPA, 1 daily PBI, 1 daily RSW. Although the FLL and TPA flts should really be all year round especially with WN in the market now.

The FL flight from PHL to PBI is still in the schedule for the summer. Cuts must be elsewhere.

PBI is South Florida's BEST airport!

RDU-CLT is a LOT farther than RIC-PHF.

Richmond is just over 55 miles down I-64 from Newport News. That 80-mile figure is for RIC-ORF.
