A quick question for someone in the know...

In a few weeks I will be making my way home from FLL via BWI to ROC on AirTran.

I am curious to know about how many aircraft in the fleet are equipped with this service.

Has anyone been on an aircraft eqipped with it, and if so what was it like?

Thanks so much in advance!

Joey

Of course this question gets asked when I'm off. I believe there are now over 20 aircraft with XM satellite radio installed. I have been on several flights that have had XM and I have to say it is pretty awesome. The tuner itself is pretty simple. There are buttons for selecting channel up or down, volume or down, and a button to browse by category. There is also a green backlit text display that lets you know what you are listening to. Earphones are available for purchase for $3 in coach and are yours to keep. If you upgrade to Business Class, they are complimentary. I'd recommend bringing your own as the quality of ours isn't the greatest. In the seatback pocket, there will be a laminated list of channels. I think the coolest experience I've had with it was watching a breaking news story on CNN Airport Network in the terminal, stepping on to the aircraft and plugging in, and only missing about a minute of the story. I hope you get to experience it.

GroundStop,

Just out of curiousity, are the only planes that have the XM Satellite still only the 717s with the Sir Elton decal on them; I know that all remaining aircraft including the 73G will ultimately have them retrofitted down the road?

I flew CAK-BOS on a 717 with XM. It's cool, but the one drawback to me was the channel names are very non-specific and there's a few second lapse between selection and the music coming on. This makes it alittle annoying to search through and find something you really want. After about 15-20 minutes of tinkering with it I was finally able to find a small group of channels I liked. Nevertheless, a cool feature.

To me I believe that the XM on FL is a superior IFE product than what
you get on most airlines except B6 and F9. On most of the others you
get a canned, taped product, especially with the audio channels.

Elton John lives in Atlanta. He does shows at Caeser's Palace in Las Vegas, when Celine Dion is away. I heard him say in an interview that he flies back to Atlanta after the shows ... hmmmm, I wonder if he takes AirTran.

Interesting, Elton's new release is called "Answer in the Sky" maybe AirTran should use that as a new slogan.

His show in Vegas is very cool - check it out if you're headed out there.

N766UA -

There's always a few seconds lapse when selecting a channel. Signal has to load from the satellite. I have XM radio in my Honda, wife has Sirius in her Jeep, both do the same. FWIW, I find the actual program content on Sirius to be the better of the two.

How was your CAK-BOS flight? Haven't done that one yet, but the FL people at CAK are pretty darn good. They do a lot with a little there, that's for sure.

Groundstop -

Are the headphones 1 prong or 2? I need to know which headset to bring! Thanks.

Hey,

Thanks for the info! It'd be neat if my plane was equipped, just to try it. But if not, it's not a big deal!

I actually like the XM over the Sirius, but, see, that's what makes the world go around. I agree with one poster that at first the channel names are a bit mystifying ("Ethyl"? "Fred"? Where's "Lucy" and "Ricky"?) But that's part of the fun of XM. The fairly-blue XM Comedy channel is absolutely hilarious, and I upgrade my Avis car to get the XM just to have that channel. On the 30-minute drives between locations on the biz trip that I make most often, I have more than once left a meeting in a not-too-great mood, only to be laughing my ass off 5 minutes later in the car and well-ready for my next meeting.

Best,

Bill

Capt.Fantastic:

Elton showed how much he (or at least his record company) really knows or cares about Atlanta by naming his album "Peachtree Road" with a picture of some deserted byway out in the middle of nowhere.... heh heh

Maybe one of the AirTran folks knows this. How much is to the equipment in the armrests? Is it something mx can fix during a turn in ATL? Or is it inop until the plane sees a hangar again?

There used to be links to pics through the original press release, but it's gone I'm afraid. Anybody else?

Speaking of XM, do any of my colleagues here who are "in the know" have an idea on when the first 737 will be outfitted with the system?

I have brought my new XM receiver to work and the comedy channels
are good mood lifters on a not so good day at the office.

Actually, I was curious if each armrest or seat has its own little box or 'receiver', or if they're all just little screens and controls connected by wire to each other. Seems like if it was the former, it'd be pretty quick to fix any broken ones.

As much money as Sir Elton has, I doubt he flies commercial very often
