British low-cost airline EasyJet has placed firm orders for 17 of Boeing 149-seater 737-700 aircraft, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.
The newspaper said the order with a list price value of $600 million was part of an expansion plan to almost triple its passenger volumes by 2004.
EasyJet plans a stock market flotation later this year valuing the company at about 500 million pounds ($790 million).
EasyJet has three European hubs in London, Liverpool in England and Geneva. It plans for a fourth in Amsterdam.
Citing Chairman Stelios Haji-Ioannou and Managing Director Ray Webster, the FT said EasyJet expected to double its workforce to 2,500 by 2004 and expand its fleet of Boeings to 44 from 18 over the same period.

This order puts Boeing on a better pace than '99. This is 113 firm orders for Q1. John Leahy has today and tomorrow to announce 143 firm new orders in March to back up his claim of 61% marketshare YTD. The Airbus site shows 34 firms but hasn't been updated since March 1. Unless I missed a massive order announcement somewhere, looks like Boeing will take the quarter.
Can you imagine if Boeing won the orders race this year? What would the press and Airbus say? They'd be choking on all the BS they put out at the close of '99. Boeing's not dead yet people.
