As I write this at 12:40 eastern one 738 has come and gone, there are two more flights, both 757-200......but after that IT'S OVER  Sad Nothing comes in to overnight....THE END OF AN ERA

In 6 months PIE has lost 80% of its flights. What will PIE do? This only feeds the opposition of expansion from the airport's NIMBYs.  Angry

One of the attractions of St. Pete-Clearwater is the lower cost of doing business. When operating costs are divided by the number of passengers flown, it comes to about $2 per passenger at the Pinellas airport. At TIA it is $4.50. That includes landing fees, fuel surcharges and other costs.

One Delta 757 flight into TIA in December paid the airport $66,038 in fees. At St. Pete-Clearwater, that same flight would have paid $29,333.33.

So wouldn't DL save some money by sending a few flights to PIE. They serve both RSW and Naples, right?

SOUTHWEST DEAL PROMPTED ATA PULLOUT
http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/sptimes/...outhwest+deal+prompted+ATA+pullout

An ATA spokeswoman declined to comment. The airline also is dropping flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, big markets for Southwest. ATA will remain in Fort Myers and keep winter-season flights to Sarasota, both cities without Southwest flights.

I think they are keeping Orlando.

This month, Southwest included St. Petersburg-Clearwater on its list of code-share cities. The airline didn't consider the flights a threat to its Chicago-Tampa service, said spokeswoman Melanie Jones.

"We felt it just gave more flexibility to our customers," she said. Southwest didn't find out ATA was dropping St. Petersburg- Clearwater until after its partner made the announcement Wednesday, she said.

HMMM.....  Yeah sure

Someone in the PIE area should get some shots of the last flight going out.

I hope PIE doesn't become a deserted airport, some one will come sooner or later. They can dominate it.

I'd get a shot if I were in the area but I'm in O-Town. This is truly a sad day for ATA and PIE. Best of luck to the ATA employees of PIE. PIE sure is getting less and less serviced by the minute.

Well, I just got back. There were like 3 TV stations there!!!! Goodbye signs at the ATA counter. I went up to the resteraunt which overlooks the apron and runway. The news crews were stationed on the roof. The plane backed out, went right past us, headed toward the runway. The employees went out onto the tarmac, as the plane rolled down the runway. Very emotional, I'm glad I went. OK, no one in the resteraunt knew what all the media attention was about. I had to inform some folks. They were all waiting for the USA3000 flights. I'm going to scan the local channels tonight for coverage.

For the record, the last ATA aircraft was B757-200, N523AT.

I'm sorry.. how is this our fault exactly????

Just because we codeshare doesn't mean we have control over their flight scheduling.. that would be.. err, illegal..

Control, no. Of course not.
Influence? Oh, yeah. Lots and lots of influence.
I think it's a little naive to presume that WN had nothing to do with this.

When airlines codeshare, it's only natural that the partners consider getting rid of duplicative service. My first thought when they announced the WN investment/codeshare was "why the hell would WN codeshare on flights to PIE when WN already flies to TPA?" ATA can (hopefully) redeploy the planes to somewhere with more opportunities now, which in the long run is better for their survival.

I had the exact same thoughts.. I am curious to know what their loads were on the flights.. I know we never sent them more than 2-3 pax per flight per day since the codeshare began..

Hopefully they can use the 75's on more profitable routes instead.

Wow...2-3 is even lower than I suspected.

The best-case scenario would be if ATA can redeploy the planes on routes with good potential in and of themselves, and which offer WN codeshare opportunity - best of both worlds!

I have no idea what routes those could be, though - anyone have a guess?

kind of sad, I remember in the mid 1990's
PIE was a mini-hub for ATA. they had
several flights from the north arriving at
the same time going to MIA, FMY and PBI?
this was a connecting point for like three or
four flights.

That's too bad that PIE has very little service. cry . Its a sad day for all of the TZ employees at PIE.  raincloud

Now its open for grabs to any airline that wants to make a mega-hub in Tampa! Yeah sure I actually really like PIE, and if I were the CEO of an airline, scratchchin  I would definitely take advantage of this opportunity and rule the airport! trophy

I'm hearing the same, but since I'm being laid off this week, I'll probably be the last to know ... :p

A seasonal 738 would make sense, but don't forget that SEA is a ridicolously expensive airport to operate from ...

Looking at your website, you only fly three roundtrips ...

Yes, WN replaced our 800 seats to MDW (each day, each way, last summer) with one extra 73G .. whoppee ....
