Tips/tricks For Long Haul Flight

At first i have to excuse me because i'm sure this kind of thread has been here before a 1000 times but i couldn't find any with the search option though.
Friday is my first long haul flight in cattle class (LH526 FRA-GRU-SCL) and you might have some nice hints how to spend these some 17 hours or so in cattle class without being totally exhausted afterwards.
I know that drinking loads of water helps not getting too dehydrated but you might have more hints...

One thing you should think about is jet lag. Bring some headache medicine and something to help you sleep for the first couple nights at your destination. One of my jet lag symptoms is a severe headache the morning after my arrival. The last time I traveled to the Philippines from Texas, the jet lag triggered a migraine. I usually bring Ibuprofen and Benadryl as my jet lag medicines. I wouldn't recommend drinking any alcohol during your flight. Even if you feel tired during the day, try not to sleep until your usual bedtime. This will help adjust your body's internal clock. You might also have no appetite for the first couple days after your trip. Try to eat something anyway.

Another thing I've noticed is that if I do most of my travelling at night when travelling westward, and I arrive at my destination in the morning, there is little to no jet lag. If I leave Texas in the morning, and arrive in Manila in the evening, I get to look forward to 2-3 days of jet lag.

You probably will feel exhausted afterwards. It's hard to avoid that since you are changing time zones.

Unless your airline of choice has really good inflight entertainment, you might want to bring a CD player, AM/FM radio, and some books to entertain yourself during this epic journey. Also, bring a good set of earplugs in case you want to sleep, and get a seat by the window. I've done a lot of long-haul flights in economy class, and I've found a window seat is the best place to sleep if you are in Sardine Class. You can lean up against the wall and, well.. at least, attempt to sleep.

First thing though: Because of my size (6"4') i took a seat at the aisle because i experienced more leg space of course you can put your legs in the aisle without disturbing other pax (oh yes you can).
I never had a single headache in my life so i have no concerns about a headache.
Thanks for the hints and i will follow them especially on the leg back. that will be harder.

I would also recommend:
- That you walk around a couple of times (as possible) every couple of hours (2-3) and move in your seat as well from time to time to reduce blood pooling and clotting and subsequent medical problems. Some airlines show videos or have info in their magazines on some excercises one can do in their seat to reduce that risk.
- An eye mask and foam ear plugs. Some airlines on long flights provide those on board, but maybe bring your own to make sure. Makes sleeping easier and keep out the noise of crying children, etc.
- Bring a MP3/Apple i-Pod/CD/Cassette player with tunes, so if the audio and video programs are crap, you can have some entertainment. One cannot use an AM/FM radio in flight due to interference rules and probably wouldn't work anyway.
- Bring water with you like 1 - 1 L or 2 - 500 ml bottles or more on longer flights.
- Have a sweater/jacket/fleece top with you to help you keep you warm and to use like a pillow.
- Bring some healthy snacks with you. Choose items like low fat fruit bars or fruit snacks like raisins or low fat grain based snacks. Avoid high fat, sugary or salty snacks. Avoid nuts or nut mixes due to possible allergeries to adjacent pax.

My suggestions for long haul flight:
1) Bring your own pillow, the soft ones made by a swedish firm is amazing they sell them at most airports. My suggestion don't buy the one that goes around your neck buy the regular pillow.
2) Good reading material.(Great selection of aviation magazines at the airport.)
3)Depending on your schedule after arrival I suggest drinking Red Wine, I love red wine and it definetly helps to drink some to relax and maybe go to sleep.
4) Bring your ipod and enjoy the music with red wine.
5)Have some more red wine and make sure to have some water with it every once a while.

Enjoy the flight.

I have flown trips that took over 30 hours to reach my destination and individual flight segments up to 14 hours long. On my first long-haul trip I was uncomfortable for the first two or three days, but since then I've been much more diligent about making my time zone transition prior to leaving. Now I have virtually no jet lag at all. However, all things being equal, I still prefer to break up a 30 hour ticket with stopovers when possible.

I agree with most of the above except the red wine. Alcohol is known to be bad at altitude (note that I drink plenty on the ground, as well as dehyrdrating you, so I'm not some anti-alcohol freak). It'll make your hangover worse. If you need to sleep, try Nytol or equivalent over-the-counter sleeping aids.

On the subject of sleeping, I actually like the wrap-around neck pillows. It stops your head rolling off to one side. However, if the seats have "wings", then a regular pillow will do.

The most important thing, though, is to adjust to the time zone as soon as you can. As you appear to be arriving mid-morning, you really need to stay awake the whole day and go to bed at your usual time. Maybe catch an hour or two if you are tired as soon as you arrive at the hotel, but make the effort to get up and go out late afternoon. Eat at regular meal times too.

Finally, celebrate your arrival (either same day or next) with the red wine you'd saved from earlier!

Also, start the hydration process AT LEAST ONE DAY BEFORE; someone posted in a "dry 777 cabin" thread yesterday or the day before that drinking lots of water on the plane is of little help, because it takes the body longer than that to put it in the right places, rather than just sending it to your bladder!
Other than that, bring airplane magazines! And books. Sitting in a tube for 17 hours is boring, regardless of IFE.
And jet lag is one of those things- some people are very susceptible, while others (myself!) don't seem to be so affected.

I like that kind of thinking. You won't find a lot of people in this world being only half as considerate. But hey, I think in this case you are overdoing it...


About the jet lag: You should be ok, since westbound jet lag is always easier than eastbound, because you just get tired earlier and wake up earlier at your destination. The other way around can be really annoying.

I do agree with most of the above, my tips:
~ Drink plenty of water, starting 24 hours before the flight
~ Go into the flight in a positive frame of mind (I'm sure you will!)
~ Bring ipod or any portable music
~ Bring some kind of reading material and/or puzzles books which take time
~ Take frequent walks around the aircraft especially as you are tall

To that dehydrating matter... very good fact that i usually drink a lot of water during the day (3-4 liters). Thats makes the hydrating process you talked about not really necessary because i think i do drink enough though...

I'm not sure about the legality... but do your fellow passengers a favor and make it unscented. Nothing worse than sitting on a 14 hour flight next to some idiot who smells like he bathed in cologne for an hour before boarding... unless perhaps you consider the fellow who smells like he hasn't bathed in anything for years.

I also recommend a pair of PJ bottoms and a t-shirt with a sweatshirt onhand to put on if you get cold. You can take it off once you get too warm. Instant thermostat!  Smile My biggest point, though, is dress comfortably. Sitting in jeans or khakis for 14 hours is a bitch... been there done that... never again.

Lots of water, eye shades, sleeping pills and a noise reducing heatset are key.

The water helps with the hydration which helps with the headaches and the jet lag. Also drinking a lot will make you go to the bathroom so that ensures that you're getting up regularly to stretch your legs (DVT is a big issue).

The eye shades are a must (at least for me) because the flickering lights of the IFE system drives me nuts.

Sleeping pills - just help take the edge off when sleeping in a sitting position.

Noise Reducing headsets are amazing. I arrive at least 50% more refreshed whenever I use them.
