Boeing Field To Divert Flights To Paine Field For 2 Weeks

EVERETT, Wash. -- For two weeks, several flights from Boeing Field in Seattle will be diverted to Paine Field in Everett starting next week while the main runway at Boeing Field is repaved.

It wasn't good news for some Paine Field critics, who said they were fearful that the new flights could be a sign of noisy things to come for Snohomish County. People who live in the Paine Field area are fighting any expansion because of the potential for increased aircraft noise.

"I think it's just evidence that the camel's nose is getting a little farther into the tent," Mukilteo Mayor Don Doran said.

The flights will start Monday, said Bill Dolan, deputy airport director of Snohomish County Airport-Paine Field.

Dolan said United Parcel Service will use Paine Field for three nightly flights. Two Boeing 767s and one 757 will take off each night between 7 and 7:30 p.m., and return to Paine Field between 4:10 and 4:40 a.m.

The UPS jets will not fly Saturday evenings, Sundays or Monday mornings.

Since Boeing Field will have less than 4,400 feet of runway during the paving project, planes that need more room to land will be shifted to Paine Field. Beyond the UPS aircraft and nine smaller propeller aircraft that support the package handler's operations, two privately owned 757s will also relocate to Paine Field.

Paine Field has been the subject of controversy as supporters of expanding the airport's operations pressed county officials to pursue limited commercial passenger service as a way to spur economic development.

In nearby Mukilteo, officials have been alerted about the shift in flights, as has the Paine Field Community Council and the group Save Our Communities, an organization opposed to expansion of the county airport.

Some say a short period of flights is one thing, while a greater extension of large aircraft use of Paine Field would be another.

"Although I don't doubt the need to have alternative landing and takeoff periods for UPS, what's disturbing is the hours of operation," Doran said. "When they talk about flying at 4:30 in the morning, that's a very disturbing trend.

"The reality is that airplanes make noise," Dolan said. "757s are relatively quiet as large jets go, and 767s are reasonably quiet."

Would you think these would be Paul Allens Planes?

This was discussed last week ..

However I wonder why the article says that UPS will operate from PAE when they have ground handling set up at SEA ... I talked to the manager of their ground handler yesterday and they are ready to go ...
