Gulf Air to add 4 more destinations

Gulf Air, which operates 57 flights a week from India, plans to add four more Indian destinations to its route network Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Calicut and Amritsar, which would take the total number of cities it operates from to eleven.

As its services to India were slated to further increase, more Indian crew are being employed and the product, including vegetarian food, in-flight entertainment and sleeper seats, are being deployed on these routes.

They are also starting a new MCT-CAI-MCT route (summer only) this July. They will serve the route with 4x weekly B763 flights (GF077/78). They will also codeshare on Egyptair's 3x weekly A320 flights (MS931/GF6131) and maintain their .

"Gulf Air considering fleet renewal options
7/4/05

Gulf Air is holding discussions with aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing on options to finalize its fleet renewal plans.

The board of the airline set the go ahead in the summer of 2004 for the fleet renewal, but no specific details or timelines were set. The airline management now says that the current discussions with the manufacturers address areas like streamlining the fleet to one manufacturer and to two aircraft types down from four Airbus and Boeing types it now operates."

Any idea if they're planning to increase frequency to Bangalore? Are 2 flights a week on a A320 working out for GF? I would think 4 flights pw would be a minimum number to start attracting business travellers?

I was in Pune recently ("India's fastest growing city"?) and they're planning a new 'international' airport. It's only a short hop from Mumbai but the attractions of direct international flights (I suppose to the Gulf) are considerable. Can anyone confirm this?

Im happy to say that in May 2004, I wrote a very long 6 page "suggestions" email to GF concerning their future plans and what new destinations they should fly to and why they should and Im happy to note that AMD and ATQ was part of my suggestions...below is the copy-pasted part of that email  Smile :

Ahmedabad (AMD) is a city in India that is starved for international flights to the Middle East and UK-USA-Canada mainly. GF has the narrow body fleet to serve this city nonstop from AUH or BAH at least 3 times a week in order to cater for the large and financially very well off Gujarati Non Resident Indian community based in the Middle East, UK, USA and Canada.

AMD should be initially served 3 times a week nonstop from Abu Dhabi or Bahrain using A 320s and it should ensure that the flights easily connect both ways to Dubai, Kuwait, London, USA, Paris and Frankfurt bound flights. After the route has grown in stature, demand and profitability, service should be upgraded to 4 or 5 weekly A 320s nonstop from AUH or BAH. No Middle East airline serves AMD so this is a golden opportunity for GF to make hay on this route whilst the sun is still shining as there is also a considerable Gujrati NRI community in the Gulf.

Amritsar is another city in India that is starved for flights to the Middle East, UK, USA and Canada. GF should seriously consider flying to this Sikh holy city initially 3 times a week using Airbus A 320s only. There is a lot of traffic from NYC-YYZ-ORD-MAN-LHR-CDG-AUH-DXB-KWI-JED-RUH that is bound for Amritsar, so with no Arab airline flying to this city, GF can take advantage of this by marketing itself to be the first Middle Eastern / Western airline to serve both Ahmedabad and Amritsar. Also one must note that ATQ bound pax do not appreciate landing in DEL and then driving to ATQ which is very long!!! There is a sizeable Sikh NRI community in the Gulf especially in the UAE which GF can tap into.

Flights to Amritsar should be 3 times a week nonstop and based upon demand and yield, should increase to 4-5 weekly A 320s within one-two year’s time.

Im very happy for GF to make this bold move with India...this is what u can do when u have 140 seater A 320s in your fleet and not A 332s as your smallest aircraft which EK have. I recommended QR and KU too to use their A 320s/321s on both these routes as well as there is demand and money to be made!!!

Though Im dumbfounded that GF hasnt had or made known any intention to fly to China nonstop from AUH or BAH with A 332s!!!

What int'l carriers serve Calicut currently if any? I know several non-Indian airlines serve Cochin from the gulf and a few go to Trivandrum, but I'm not sure if anyone beyond IC and AI fly from Calicut.

It was due to start this month (April) but has been suspended indefinitely....the Last I heard they still planned to service BHX but not until NOV...with Amritsar coming online I wouldn't be surprised if they bring it forward to try and compete with AI.....
