FNT is once again filing for a Small Community Air Service Development grant for AirTran to launch FNT-LGA & FNT-BWI. They have filed for this, and been denied for the past 3 years.
Personally, I feel this is NOT the purpose of the SCASD. FNT doesn't fall into the category of airports that deserve these types of grants. AirTran could easily launch both of these routes on their own and be sucessful. FNT is not a small airport, its a reliever airport for all of Southeastern Michigan. AirTran even markets FNT as "Detroit Area," hardly what I consider a small community. There is enough demand for service they could launch this service without revenue plans & subsides.
These grants are more for small airports that have limited access to hubs and the national air transportation network. Primarily to launch prop & CRJ service to connect to hubs....cities like LBE, AVP, ITH, CHO, GTH, and many of the other winners in the past.
