It seems today more and more airlines are switching to smaller jets with more service such as America West and United ordering Canadian Regional Jets, but Delta has remained as one of the few carriers that uses big jets on short flights. Such as they use a 757 to go from Columbus to Cincinnati and a 767 from Atlanta to Detriot and L-1011 from Atlanta to Florida. While most airlines would be using propellar planes. They have also kept there old planes such as the 727 and L-1011 which are more expensive to operate. Why do you think they do this?

Delta is the largest airline in the US in terms of passengers and they have a great piece of the pie on the Eastern Seaboard of the US with hubs in CVG and ATL and a large focus in BOS, MCO, LGA, and JFK. Delta is replacing the 727s with 737-800s and the L-1011s with 777s and 767-400ERs. Delta also owns its regional carriers ASA and Comair and last week placed the largest single order in history for the CRJs. If you want to talk about an airline that uses old planes and large planes on "commuter" routes look at NW. NW flies mainline DC-9s from DTW-TVC, DTW-Flint, DTW- Bay City. NW flies 170+ DC-9s, 35 727s, 40-45 DC-10s, and 24 747-100s/200s.

Delta sees a need for the capacity. Flights into Florida are constantly full, even the L-1011s and 777s. 767-300s out of Jacksonville and Orlando are filled to the teeth and around 50% of the people on them are some of the highest ranking Frequent Flyer members Delta has. While Delta does have RJs, the mainline fleet is only large aircraft. Comair & ASA take care of the rest. The L-1011s are great machines and if Delta could, they would keep them. The truth is that they are becoming bears to keep up and are becoming unreliable. L-1011s are constantly delayed or replaced on flights by 767s or 777s.

I was stuck in Orlando a couple of months ago and I watched one Delta jet after another come in from Atlanta (almost on an hourly basis until 1am); all airplanes were either B763, L011 or B777 and all of them were completely loaded, unbelievable.

Capacity, plain and simple. It's just a matter of numbers.Delta is in the process of retiring the727's and L-1011's. The 727's are to be replaced by 737-800's for the most partand I've heard rumors of the 777's doing some of the domestic work with the 767's to take over the Tri-stars routes.
