I personally have not flown on Northwest yet, but really plan to in the next year or so! Would you vote NW as...Northworst...Northwest...or Northbest???

Your NW experience depends on whether or not you plan to fly into Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)(Metro Airport). Metro Airport is NW's main hub and is awful. The terminal is old and the nicest thing about the airport is the new HUGE parking garage. Your NW experience also can depend on whether or not there is a work "slowdown" due to labor problems. On a plus side NW has a good on time rating and the DC-9s are actually quite nice after they were refurbished.

Northbest. I have flown on them many times and I think they are a wonderful airline. It has a couple of problems, but its great. People complain about:
Food-I think their food is okay, and the breakfast is pretty good
Aircraft age-I'm sure they maintain their aircraft well, because they have a good safety record. I just have one problem, and it is the noise. other than that its okay.
Service-Everything is okay, but I wished they played movies on domestic flights. Don't other airlines do that?
Hubs-I've heard a lot of bad things about Detroit Metro, and I've never been there. They are building the Midfield Terminal, though, and it looks awesome! Memphis is great, but crowded. Minneanapolis looks pretty good. I heard they have a hub in Osaka/Kansai, and it is a excellent airport, my favorite.
I've been on NWA many times, and it is a great airline. I would fly on them again.

Never flown on them so I don't have a vote. Most of the talk around here about NWA has been negative.
BTW, according to popular opinion, a poor airline got a lot of exposure in the even worse movie, "Random Hearts". Don't waste your 3 bucks on that one.

Based on my personal experiences, I have to say "Northworst". I don't mind flying on those old -9's that much, and like posted above, once they go thru their $3-4 million rehab, they actually are not that bad! That's where the story ends, though. Like Vctony said, DTW is a poor excuse for a major airport, NW's service overall is sorely lacking, the amenities/value you get for the price you pay is quite poor (1st class from ALB-DTW you get nothing, while on Delta, AA, United, USAirways on similar & shorter length stages you get a full blown breakfast!) and to top it off, the moves that NW's management have been making (buying any and every old DC-10 not going to FedEx for MD-10 conversions, for example) are truly mysterious! Last time I checked their financials, they're not doing too bad!!!!
Like anything else, you have to fly on them yourself to make your own judgement on NW - there are many folks out there who love NW and I'm sure could put up a great argument for "Norhtbest", but like my dad always told me, don't pass judgement until you can back up what you've passed judgement on!!

My brother in law, who is in the US Army stationed at Okinawa Island in Japan, has flown Northwest twice in the last year between Osaka and Boston where we live and both times they have lost his luggage.
Fortunately in both cases the luggage was found and returned within 24 hours but as I'm sure anyone out there who has lost luggage or has had it missing for awhile, it is a major headache!
On a side note, when he went home after spending this past Christmas and New Year's with us, his flight to Detroit was delayed here in Boston which meant he would miss his connecting flight to Osaka. They ended up putting him on a Northwest flight to Amsterdam (12 hours later mind you) then connecting to a KLM flight from Amsterdam to Osaka.
I guess you can say my wife and I are not big fans of Northwest!

I have only flown NW once, from SFO-MSP-SFO. I had a great experience. The crew was very friendly and professional and they kept pretty on time which was great considering it was around the busy Christmas season. The food was decent and I liked their breakfast.

As someone who lives in Toledo, OH only about 30 Miles from DTW I often have to fly with NWA. I HATE IT!!! Detroit is without a doubt the worst airport on the face of the planet! It's dirty, the employees are rude and LOUD, it's badly designed and the PFC's are staggering!!! NWA runs old aircraft, the DC-9's are okay, not thrilling but okay, the DC-10's are old, dirty and uncomfortable, I'm not sure I'd buy one for scrap!! The onboard staff are often unfriendly, the flights are late and the food, (if you get it) is bad. I have made the 4+ hour flight from DTW to LAS and not recieved a meal, the pilot who left the airport to get lunch is my hero! Transatlantic service is okay, usually the lowest bidder, I try to find flights that are being run by KLM, KLM is EXCELLENT! I am a lover of Southwest airlines, they are 5 times better than NWA and the service is 10 times better, I have been over three hours late with NWA due to equipment problems. I must now say that I have never been on time with Southwest either, I'VE ALWAYS BEEN EARLY!!! I avoid NWA like the plague but sometimes they are the only flight that fits my schedule. If you are flying to anyplace that you simply need to get there on time take SWA, if you are flying to have an adventure fly NWA, if you are flying to get there on time, have excellent service, but are willing to pay a premium take Midwest Express "The best care in the air".

Their old aircraft are in great shape and well maintained, they never lose my luggage, new service plans are underway to put food on MORE flights and increase overall first class service, they treated me great on MSP-NRT in WBC, and they are the on-time airline of the decade! Well, it's not NorthBest but pretty close to that. My flight on their DC10 was very nice, clean aircraft, most F/As ok (a couple were rude though), GREAT food, they didn't lose my luggage and I got to visit the cockpit arter the flight.

I'd have to say Northbest. Throught bad and good flights, most were good. I AM a DTWer and most of us here have no option but to fly NWA because about 85% of teh flights here are NWA, 3% AA (2nd largest), 2% DL... If we want to fly another airline, we have to lose the chance to get our World Perks, whick most DTWers have a lot of, we would have to pay an arm and a leg, and we would have to connect in some other city. Now, I don't mind connecting in another city, but most people do.

I am flying to Beijing nonstop from DTW on NWA on April 18 with school. This will be the ultimate field trip. Anyways, what is NWA international coach like on both 744s and 742s? I am also flying on 3Q (?) and CA (?) on domestic flights PEK-Kunming on CA (?), Kunming to Dali 3Q (?), Dali to Kunming 3Q (?), Kunming to Shanghai 3Q (?) and Shanghai NW. I would appreciate it if you would tell me what kind of an experience I will have on these airlines (and what they are), and how NW international coach is mainly.
