It might be too dangerous for foreign crews to stay on layovers in UIO right now with all the protests going on..... and what about GYE? Are Air Madrid still flying there?

The airport's website does not have any mention of MX. However, it seems now that things are back to normal.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

According to BBC World Service the airport was closed after the Ecuadorian congress removed the president from office. It was to prevent him from fleeing the country. As he was unable to leave, he instead went to the Brazilian embassy to seek political asylum and the Brazilian ambassador is negotiating for his passage out of the country.

There is no danger for crews to stay there, the airports were closed becaused protesters blocked the runways so Mr. Gutierrez couldn't leave the country.

Ok Guys,

Just to clear off doubts. The reason why UIO was closed, is simply the craziest thing I have ever seen in my life! (GYE closed beacuse they didnt want the president to escape through there) This is what happened:

As mentioned before, the president tried to escape, a EJERCITO helicopter (Gazel) picked him up from the palace and went to UIO. A crazy guy came with a Chevrolet Blazer and knocked over UIO's fence and about 1000 cars entered the RWY and 1000 people also.

The president boarded this aircraft:

The pilot taxied at about 55knots to RWY 17, and due to weather he couldnt take off, it was there when all the people entered the RWY and layed down on the RWY and the cars sorrounded the airplane so the plane couldnt take off!

NOTE: IS THIS AMAZING OR WHAT!?

The plane returned to the Air Force base and the helicopter flew back there and picked him up again and flew him to a military base where the people couldnt get him.

Then more people, and more cars entered the RWY and started racing and sounding there horns with Ecuador flags flashing and so much more. Airport security couldnt do anything else than watch..... A friend of mine, Fellow UIO spotter got in and made pics, ill get the pics later. You wouldnt believe it.

I talked with UIO security and airport manager and they said they closed the airport because a plane couldnt land with people on the RWY!! So, at 19:00 local planes started to land again.

Ironically enough, I sold my cam a week ago, an my Olympus C-770 hasnt arrived yet. Hope you liked this story. More like a dream ehh?

And yeah, hes in the BRAZIL embassy, honestly, I dont know how the Brazilian President can accept such a criminal in his country. What a shame.

Getting a bit off topic, I just hope the situation in Ecuador will get better soon.

My sister lives there since 1999 and I've had the opportunity of visiting that nice country twice.

Saludos Airportmanager!, and keep us informed!!
