At Airport Upgrades For UA

I will be flying on UA from lax-sfo on friday afternoon and back on sunday eveing. I would like to know what are my chancesw of getting a free upgrade from ecomey plus to first class or how much I would have to pay for my dad and I to upgrade.

You can use 500 mile upgrade certificates. If you are a general member of the frequent flyer program, these upgrade clear up to 24 hours before your flight. The coupon's cost 50 bucks each for premier members and above. Therefore it would cost you and your dad 200 bucks r/t. If you are a general member, I can't remember the amount, but I think it's like 350 or 375 dollars for the 4 certificates required.

You can do this all online, regardless of where you bought you ticket.

The chance of getting a free upgrade, very low. Usually united has no problem getting premier's to pay 50 bucks for an upgrade. Not to mention they give the certificates out for free if you're premier. This fills first class very fast.

You have the best chance of getting a free upgrade (I've done it myself) flying international where it costs significantly more to upgrade and the cabins don't fill up as fast and coach oversells.

I know on a recent BWI -MSP flight on NWA, I paid $80 for a one way upgrade. Worth every penny, but I don't know anything about United's upgrades.

If you can get the upgrade, great, but that is a fairly short flight. You are in economy plus already so why waste the cash? (or the miles!)

Try the self service check-in.

Sometimes you will be offered an upgrade there (at a charge of course.)

Why would you want to waste an upgrade on a short flight like LAX-SFO? If you are going to upgrade, at least do it on a flight with a meal (except for Hawaii). The flight time is short and all you get is a bigger seat and free booze. The First Class seats between LAX and SFO are not even as good as Business Class seats on 3-class planes.

That said, the gate control agent can upgrade you, if they have seats available, but they probably will not unless there is a good reason, such as you are a big frequent flyer or a celebrity have been massively inconvenienced by UA. You should try to fly on one of the 757s as it is almost impossible to upgrade on the 737s or A320s at the gate. The smaller planes usually have their handful of First Class seats taken by Premiere Milage Plus members who upgraded the night before or earlier.

You don't really upgrade into or out of E+. E+ is not considered a separate cabin.

That said, if you paid for a fare that gets you into E+, and you are not a Premier, your fare may not be far off of an F fare. I would see what the $$ difference is.
