I was wondering if anyone could tell me about Purdues aviation program. Costs, websites for more info, and whatever else you can tell me.

Purdue University's Flight Program is difficult to get into b/c we only accept the number that we have room for. What determines if you get in is strictly numbers and nothing more. Do good in school, get a high GPA, do good on your SATs and/or ACTs and you should be able to get in.

The program is a four year program in which you earn your BS. You earn all your licenses up to your commerical (which is enough to get you a job at a regional carrier).

Our program is really excellent... like every other flight student I know here, I have never regretted choosing Purdue over any other aviation school. Our program is very demanding, but that's what makes it the best, and that's what prepares you for airline training. During the first two years at Purdue, you do a lot of flying. The first three semesters are in Warrior IIIs, coming fresh from the Piper factory in Vero Beach, FL in August. The first semester course is 45 hours and ends in your Private pilot certificate. The next two semesters are time buildinmg, flying 50 hours per semester in the Warrior. Finally, in your fourth semester, you earn your instrument rating and commercial certificate in the Piper Arrow. Fifth semester is the multi-engine rating. We also have several simulators and FTDs, as well as three turbine aircraft that are flown by student, 2 King Airs and a Beechjet. I need to go now, but I'll add more later on...

If you choose to become a Certified Flight Instructor, you can also get a job here at the University teaching. Students generally take on about 2-4 students per semester, depending on your class load. The one and only drawback to Purdue (no offense to the Indianians here) is its location. I'm just not real fond of the mountainless terrain.

As for costs, residents of Indiana can expect to pay about $60,000; $20,000 for each of the first two years (when you take flight lessons), and about $10,000 for each of teh last two years. If you're out of state, add about $10,000 per year to the price tag. It's not the cheapest way to go, but you have to pay for quality.

Anyone interested in an aviation career should take a look at Purdue, which is not just for pilots.

I graduated from Purdue's Aviation Managment program, and currently work in strategic planning for a major U.S. carrier.

Not only will you benefit from a high-calibre aviation curriculum, but you will also be able to take advantage of all the "big school" perks that you can't get at specialty schools.
