Today I read an article on Brazilian journal "Folha de Sao Paulo" about Varig. An executive of the airline mentioned the company´s inmediate plans to open a four times a week service from Sao Paulo to Munich.
The article provides no further information. Does anyone knows anything about this proposed, quite unusual indeed, route?
Which Munich? Wouldn´t be more feasible to resume service to other more important European destinations such as Zurich or Amsterdam?

Varig starts the flight on June the 13th 3 times a week on a B767-300ER. I think the flight is to Munich and not to Zurich because of the Star Alliance connections from Munich to the rest of Europe.

True, Varig will indeed inaugurate a line to Munich soon using 767-300ER equipment as stated above. I also heard that the airline is bound to re-operate flight 860 Porto Alegre(POA)-GIG-JFK in the coming days with an MD-11. In terms of being feasible I believe both Zurich and Amsterdam are a quite more feasible of a market, but let's keep in mind that apart from the Star Alliance connections the market Brazil-Germany is quite large. It will basically complement the leg to Frankfurt which is already been flown daily.

Remember, quite a few people "immigrated" to Brazil from Germany after WW2. I'm sure they'd love to visit the Fatherland one last time.....

I doubt they want to visit their fatherland. In my country, Argentina, there are still many nazis that came after the WWII but they are hidden or try not to notice. The nazi-hunter organization Simon Wiesental is always on the look for them and the only chance to get back to their country is generally when they are found and extradited (in general flying Lufthansa, not Varig).

Actually, since we are in this topic, I want to join in and make a slight correction here. The majority of German immigrants into Brazil (over 80%) came into the country in the 19th century, little less than hundred years before the war. One example could be my family since I am part fourth generation German descent. Anyway, back to the topic....
In terms of selecting a carrier there would be no difference. Varig and Lufthansa coordinate their flights appropriately into Frankfurt since it will be in their interest as part of a Star Alliance "convenience".
