I was looking at Ryanair.com (everyone needs a good laugh now and then) and I came across this new destination in their list - "PortAventura (UMR)". I looked up the code UMR and I get...

CITY :
UMR C WOOMERA /AUSA:SOUTH AUSTRALIA
AIRPORT-HELIPORT :
UMR A WOOMERA /AUSA - 0K
>

which I believe is the old rocket range in the middle of the desert of South Australia - hmmmm ! Is this the new Adelaide West (Woomera) ? Is Ryanair taking on Virgin Blue ? NASA ? Enquiring minds want to know !

PortAventura is a Theme Park in North east Spain on the Costa Dorada.
http://www.portaventura.es

Dunno why its on Ryanair's Destination list, but when you click 'view destination' it links to a Theme Park Promotion "Fly to Reus and come to PortAventura"

When you try and find flights from PortAventura to anywhere, fr.com just gives an error message. Possibly the rocket isn't ready for passenger flights yet.  Smile

I should think that 'PortAventura' is merely used to market the parks and resorts in that area. REU - currently served twice-daily from STN - is very convenient to this area, what with it being right there.  Wink So good thinking.

One could say that it's more accurate and less misleading than Frankfurt Hahn, Brussels Charleroi, Oslo Torp, etc, etc  Wink

This is disgusting behaviour by Ryanair. They should be closed down for this total incompetence.
Imaging advertising that you fly to somewhere that doesnt have an airport.
Sicking, shocking, disgusting.

It's Reus  Wink

Nooo - it's superb marketing! People might not realise that REU is the airport serving that area, so to help aid identification and awareness simply state the nearby big resort! Genius. Mr A will now think: 'Oh, I want to go to PortA. I remember Ryanair stating that place. If I fly into Reus it will be a quick ride to PortA.' Cuts out hassle and frustration.

So why not do the usual FR bait-and-switch routine and call it Reus(PortAventura) - instead of Reus (definitely-not-Barcelona).

Otoh, Mr A will remember the time Ryanair marketed Reims-Champagne as 'handy for disneyland paris' and make similar assumptions about the trustworthiness of ryanair's marketing speak.....

Considering PortAventura has the Chav appeal, I think Ryanair are onto a winner!

That's the thing: I barely remember it let alone Mr A who has no interest in aviation.

No! It's working perfect. People don't know Reus, but do know PortAventura.
Marketing wise it's a good move.( LHR is called London while it still takes 40 minutes. Why not Hounslow Airport? And NRT?......... More then 2 hours outside Tokyo)

Place your cursor over Rome.
Notice the route to Klagenfurt. But is that not the dot for Graz...?
Then hover your cursor over Graz, and it shows nothing to Rome....

Digging deeper, it's a route to Klagenfurt, but drawn in error on the map.

I know, nit-picky....I'm bored.
