Hi!

I've noticed that quite a number of sites refer to VS being housed at Terminal 1 at JFK. I understand that VS is now at T4. Why the change and when did it happen? Thanks is advance.

Just a guess, but I think it happened around the end of March.

Not sure of the reason, but possibly something to do with the ground handling being outsourced, or some other contractual reason.

As for the reason, I've heard several: That the A346 didn't fit at some gates at T1, that they wanted to build a new clubhouse and T4 had room, and a third one I heard is because SQ had moved to T4.

I beleive it was done around the holidays.

AS I understand it, I had freight shipped that VS lost for 2 weeks b/c of moving around its real estate

Happened on Feb 12, 2004.

RJpieces is right on the reasons: IAT (Terminal 4) had the space for the VS Clubhouse and could accomodate the A340-600. I guess a bonus is that they can be in the same terminal as SQ, although it is unlikely they will feed passengers to each other (VS: LHR-JFK, SQ: SIN-FRA-JFK).

Of course not, but SQ First passengers do use the VS lounge now...And the VS Clubhouse is probably one of the best at JFK.

word on the street is that the management of T1 sucks. i think SQ may have left for this reason.

for me, the landside location of the lounges is a big negative for T4.

Another possible reason is that JFK claims that Terminal 4 is A380 ready and JFK is definitely one of the airports that will see a VS 380 on a daily rotation. I'm not sure about Terminal 1's preparations for the 380, if any are even needed, because Air France is there as well as Lufthansa, who both have the 380 on order. Air France will definitely use it to JFK. I'm still unsure if Lufthansa would use it to JFK. Only time will tell.

How can you be sure that AF will use A380s on the JFK run? Have they announced their A380 routes? They seem to have gone to B772s instead of B744s on some flights (I know the difference is not that much, but still is a reduction on capacity).

Of course not, but SQ First passengers do use the VS lounge now...And the VS Clubhouse is probably one of the best at JFK.

I know man, I was joking about the feeder.  Wink Forgot to add the funny face. Does SQ use the VS lounge?

I believe AF said their first routes will be JFK, MIA, YUL, and (don't quote me on this) NRT(?). So, AFAIK AF will be sending their A380s to JFK. I'm surprised at MIA, though, as AF are putting the 747 and 340 on the route, both aircraft that will be losing Espace Première, and I can only imagine that the 380 will have it. So, I guess AF are willing to put the P capable aircraft on the route in favour of capacity.

If you are in the lounge in the first place, presumably the airline would allow you the fast lane through security, no? I could still see the hassle though.

Terminal 4 has four gates that are/will be A380 ready. As far as I know, Terminal 1 has not yet started on their improvements but plan to be ready by the time the 380 starts taking to the skies.

Here is some info from a recent Newsday article:

Kennedy Airport will need $120-million worth of renovations -- including widening the runways, moving a taxiway away from the terminal and strengthening bridges -- in order to safely accommodate the Airbus 380, a superjumbo double-decker that has a wingspan nearly the length of a football field.

Some of the new construction will be needed just to make sure that the wingtips of the A380 don't hit other planes or trucks. That means a main taxiway will have to be completely relocated 16 feet farther away from the terminal.

The FAA also expects to restrict the taxiing speed of the A380 to 15 mph, while other large jets can taxi at 20 to 25 mph. The reduced speed will help keep the A380 from drifting off the centerline. The FAA's Dermody said he also expects the A380 to have a designated route from runway to gate, and because its tail is 15 feet higher than the tail of a 747, the A380 won't be able to taxi next to a runway where planes are taking off or landing.

The airport's runways will be widened from 150 feet to 200 feet. The four bridges that carry aircraft over the JFK Expressway and the Van Wyck will be reinforced -- even though they were shored up several years ago to handle the Boeing 777 and another large Airbus plane, the A340. And the pavement in front of selected gates at Terminal One and Terminal Four will have to be strengthened to handle the 1.2-million-pound A380.

That's because AF has made the 777 their main high-yield aircraft (meaning it has the most premium seats) while the 744 has had the first class sections removed and is now used mostly on low-yielding tourists routes. When AF receives their 380s, they will most likely be flown on routes similiar to CDG-JFK where there are lots of high-yielding pax.

Yes. Only for First class pax though. They also use the Swiss and Varig lounges.

Overall, the following airlines that fly into JFK have ordered the 380:

Lufthansa
Air France
Virgin Atlantic
Emirates
Singapore
Qantas
Korean Air

Out of those, all except Lufthansa and Emirates are likely to be sending their 380s to JFK eventually.

Isn't EK likely to start A380s to JFK? Afterall, they have the largest order, and the A340s come in full from DXB (at least I am told by friends / family who have traveled on the route).

I do believe Air France said that the 380 would operate from CDG to JFK, YUL, NRT, & PEK, which are also routes that now use, or will be using, the 773ER (77W) at least once a day.
