As I recall, the only reason they used OMA was the perimeter rules at LGA and DCA which were both airports that they were serving. This allowed them to do so. Otherwise, they had no other nonstops except to the hubs.

In 1991, OMA served DSM, MLI, CID, DCA, LGA, PHX and LAS all nonstop. It was indeed the stop-off point for PHX-LGA and PHX-DCA prior to the CMH hub. You might want to check out: http://www.cactuswings.com.
Once there, go to "AWA history", then click "route maps". which shows nearly all America West route maps. Industry guru Kevin Trinkle did a nice job of getting the site together.

I flew OMA-DCA-OMA a few times and completely forgot that they also served LGA from OMA. Prior to AW flying OMA-DCA Western flew it.
Interesting, that over the years there have been a few airlines that did OMA-NYC nonstop. Back in the 70s or so UA flew it from LGA, followed by Peoples Express from EWR, followed by Midwest EWR-OMA and now CO EWR-OMA.

ICT also had nonstop service to DCA and LGA during that time period. As I recall, the reason that ICT had the service was because HP didn't have planes that could make PHX to DCA, LGA non-stop. They chose ICT because of its geographic location. Once the airline got 737s that could make it non-stop, ICT service eastbound was dropped.
My father worked for HP in ICT from the day the company started business until last year when he retired. ICT was one of their original cities.
