Which Planes Are The Most Fuel Efficient?

Apologies if this has been discussed in the past (I didn't see anything at first glance), but with all the talk about rising oil prices, I keep wondering what the most fuel efficient planes are, and if there is an upswing in sales of those planes.

To that end, let's divide commercial planes into three categories: wide-body, narrow-body, and regional jets. In each of these categories, anyone know what the most (and least) fuel efficient planes are?

That's a somewhat vauge question. "Fuel efficency" can mean several meaures: SFC (spec. fuel consumption), but also fuel burn per seat, etc.

Just generally speaking, aircraft on the upper-end of their niche (most seats) return better fuel economy.

Widebody: probably the 773A
Narrow-body: probably 757-300
Regional jet: probably 717-200 (the E170/E190 are not RJs)

The Next Generation Boeing's with the winglets would probably be the most fuel efficient, followed by 777, 764 and maybe the A330. The ones that really aren't and that are still flying by US carriers are...DC9's, MD80's, DC10's, B727's and the classic 737's.

There is a huge misconception as to what a regional jet actually is. The truest definition is an airplane smaller than a 737/A320 with range in below 1,500 nm. The 717, CRJ, and ERJ all occupy this niche. The E190/E170 do not, becuase their mission profile and service is compatible with mainline aircraft like the 737/A320.

What killed the 717 was that nobody wanted a regional jet with 110 seats. If an airline is going to order an airplane with that much capacity, why not the E190 which is a more flexible, capable aircraft?

A RJ flies to Santa Barbara. A 737 flies to San Francisco.

And the most fuel efficient aircraft is made by Boeing. It's the B727 !

I thought I had heard recently, despite their age, 767's are very fuel efficient, is that true?
