How Old Are Legends DC9s

legends Dc-9s are old! thats all i can say. A new airline, old planes, i would not go near them!!

It's not their age, but how they are looked after! Midwest Express also have many old aircraft but they are really well looked after and maintained in spotless condition. I think the same goes for Legend. Have a look at this photo;

There are a lot of much newer aircraft in far worse condition!

There's nothing to worry about flying Legend

The three -30s that Legend started out with are all ex-Continental aircraft originally delivered to Texas International in 1979. The DC-9-30 had one of the highest dispatch reliability rates in the CO fleet for many years. Only in the last couple of years did age (some of them dated back to 1967-68) contribute to increased downtime and maintenance costs.

TI acquired several new DC-9s in 1979 and Legend is trying to get there hands on as many of these as possible.

I wonder, If Legend does well (I hope they do) will they be looking at buying some 717s in a few years time?

The only thing that makes me think they may not do is because they've spent so much on customising their DC-9s - It'll probably come down to how much the cost of fuel goes up in the next 2-3 years.

As long as a plane is well maintained, I don't think I would worry about it. DC-9's are still in service with many airlines, and I never hear of and significant problems with them. Heck, I'd fly a DC 3 if I know it was kept up.

Maybe, but maybe not. They just signed a deal with Pratt and Whitney for engine maintainence for their fleet of DC-9s. If Pratt can do, well and I hope they do with this contract, they may be able to have them look at continuing the agreement with the purchase of Airbus A318s, or A32X series jets. Or they could use them as an airline to try to push Boeing for the PW6000 on the 717. I think we'll have to wait and see what happens. I think at the very least, they will use the DC-9's until their engine maintaince deal of 10 years runs out. If not, we may see other Pratt powered planes taking their place.
Not saying this deal will have any effect on their future fleet plans, but it MAY be something to consider. But it could mean nothing too.

I don't think Legend will consider the Airbus or any other Boeings apart from the 717 for one reason - fuselage width. Airlines like Legend and Midwest Express can offer 4 abreast seating on their DC-9/MD-80 aircraft without losing too much capacity. To offer 4 abreast seating for the whole plane on one which normally has 6 abreast seating would mean losing a lot more seats and thus making it harder to make money - I doubt people would like 5 abreast seating as that brings in the dreaded "middle seat"

The PW 10 year deal makes you think they'll be keeping the DC-9s a good while.

Although having said that airlines like Finnair, Austrian and SAS all have a fair few MD-87s between them which are being replaced by A320 and 737NG aircarft - these would be perfect for Legend - Quieter, more fuel efficient, less maintenance intensive and they have PW engines too!

Would you have worried about getting on a 7 year old MD-83 (Alaska Airlines fl 262) or a barely 10 year old B767 (Egypt Air 990) or what about a 7 year old MD-11 (Swissair 111)- age has nothing and I mean NOTHING to do with safety. A one year old 777-200 that hasn't been maintained is more dangerous than a 30 year old DC-9 that has been.

There are plenty of 30-40 year old jets flying around today and you dont see 727-100s falling out of the sky or DC-8 freighters crashing unless some nimrod forgot to tie down the cargo! Since most crashes are pilot error anyway I'd be more concerned about how qualified the pilot was rather than maintenance.

I think Legend will stick with the DC-9 for quite a while. I haven't heard anything yet on how loads have been so far so it's hard to say what their future will be.

If they do prove to be as successful I see them going after some of US's late-model DC-9s. They were built as late as 1982 and one of the biggest expenses (hushkitting) has already been taken care of.

I saw on justplanes.com that National is adding a 13th (!) 757 to the fleet. I had no idea they had so many. My question is: do you think that National will stick with a fleet of all the same planes, a-la Southwest, only with them using 757's, or as they expand, will the diversify? If loads are as good as advertised, why not stick something with more capacity on the longer flights?

Although DC9's and 717's have 2x3 seating, in Legend and Midwest Express luxury configuration they have 2x2 seating throughout the entire aircraft. And very big, brown, leather seats they are too......

I would never go on a DC9 (Dinosaur Craft). Most of those planes were built in the 60's. Come on Legend, invest in some 737-200's or -300's or even some -500's, but not DC9's.

I saw one of their DC-9's was one I flew at CO (508). This was a late model 9 with -15 power JT8's delivered in 1979 and was a nice aircraft. CO's maintenance is outstanding and many of the mechanics that worked these planes were around when they were brand new.

I flew the 9's for about a 1,000 hours. A great machine, and I'm sure they will serve Legend well.
