Question About Singapore Airlines' Flight To NY

I beleive it flies eastbound all the time, so across the Pacific to EWR, across the Atlantic on the way back.


I think Big Foot is blurry, Its not the photographers fault. Theres a large out of focus monster roaming the countryside

I didn't consider prevailing winds I guess, which could make a big difference...still, it seems the eastbound route would be quite a long diversion, no? I know they're nowhere near MTOW, but there can't be too many options in terms of routes that wouldn't stretch the 345...

No, not all flights take the great circle path. I believe most of the time, SQ's EWR flights fly eastbound both ways. If the wind is not as favorable on the return flight, then they might take the polar route.

When I did the flight in Jan we did East Bound both times. EWR-SIN over Europe etc flight time was 17 hours and change. SIN-EWR over the pacific/Canada was a little over 18 hours into a Snow storm.

The 345 is a great aircraft much nicer to fly on than the 777, but the 777 seems to be more efficient.

The computer flight plan uses a "minimum time track". What that does is analyzes winds aloft and uses the routing that requires the minimum amount of time. There are certain constraints put in such as airspace to avoid, fuel burn constraints, projected payload.

Generally, the flights to EWR tend to go eastbound into and out of EWR. However, I have seen the EWR-SIN flights routed across the pole if the winds are right.

when i took the fight in jan 21 from EWR to SIN, it flew over canada, greenland, scandinavia, eastern europe n such.... so, i guess it's via atlantic....really really quiet plane, much quieter than the 772er of SQ that i took in summer 02 from ORD to SIN.....

Hate to nitpick. But on Polar routes, winds are usually not significant. If the tailwinds over the Atlantic/Europe/Asia are favorable enough, then SQ will fly eastbound. Anyway, in the end, we are saying the same thing. They will take the track that will take the least time, or what you called "minimum time track", and it depends on winds. For the same reason, from SIN to EWR, it usually takes a more southerly route to take advantage of the tailwinds rather than take the great circle route over the Pole.

Well, now after you have restated, we are in agreement. It's really the winds over the Atlantic/Europe/Asia that determine whether the flight will take an eastbound route or a Polar route. The first time you said it, you said I have seen the EWR-SIN flights routed across the pole if the winds are right.

This implies it's the wind over the Pole that determines the direction. Winds on the Polar routes don't vary much, but winds over the Atlantic/Europe/Asia vary more.

You're right I did say "if the winds are right". However, I never did say which winds. No implication there at all it's what you read into my statement.

The other issue is the flight might be routed over the pole no matter what the winds. There is an issue of traffic rights across the pole and having to keep the route operational. SQ has to pay for the route and there is a flat fee plus flight fees.

It's not quite as simple as you would believe.

I'm sure it's not that simple. You work for SQ, you would know much better than I do. I was merely informing people who might wonder why SQ often takes the longer route over the Atlantic instead of the Polar route. I'm sure that was your intent, too.
