I wanted to buy tickets on AI to travel between ORD and LHR and also between LHR and BOM. However, there seems to be no way to actually look at fares and/or buy tix on AI's stupid website. Does AI only sell tix thru' travel agents? Any help would be appreciated.....

1) my dad just took this flight a couple of weeks ago, and arrived to ORD just yesterday from BOM, and his flight once again, was via FRA.

I bought tickets from teh AI website three times.. go www.airindia.com and click on book tickets now, new pop up will come, select criteria, then select the flights, and price will be shown.. pretty simple.. prices are OK (if G/V Class) but compare with agent

Sure you can buy tickets. In fact when I bought tickets in Nov 04 for travel in Jan 05, I got a great round trip deal for ORD-BOM. Better than any travel agent could give. While the instructional design is not of the highest quality, and the ticket is a paper ticket (it arrived in 2 days), I was quite happy with the overall experience given the fact that it was about $400 cheaper than the next cheapest airline.

AI now has e-tickets available for all travelers on the India-UK/US routes and are expanding that further into other routes as time progresses.

I've bought tickets on AI's website.

It's quite easy. In many cases, the ticket prices on their website match those offered by some bucket shop.

OK, fellas... I dont know what I was smoking yesterday... I finally saw the "Book Online Tickets" now link on the AI website. Last night I had only only looked at the main section where they only show schedules, etc.

And you are right, the fare on AI's website is as good as what travel agents are quoting...

One quick question though... how do you buy a ticket with a break journey thru' the website? I need to take a stopover in London or FRA for a week or so on my way to India.

Thanks.

Theoretically NOT possible.. there is a trick though (but THINK whether you wanna do it, I am not responsible if it doesn't work - I did it myself and it worked perfect): Book the ticket w/o stopover. immediately after the booking, call your local AI office and tell them you wanted to book the stopover, but it was not possible. Tell them that as the ticket is not issued yet, they should change it w/o penalty. Alternatively, if there is too much risk for you involved, call them beforehand and tell them about your intentions, i.e. that they should amend the booking.. they may refer you to the Yatrick Call Center in BOM, but not necessarily... tell us how it went

Actually, I think it is fairly easy to operate, as it is not as "sophisticated" as other websites.. LH and BA suck in that regard.

OK, here my experiences with the AI online booking.. used it the first time in 2002, as the price that was quoted was unbeatable (and I was not yet in Singapore and didn;t know any agent there). Booked the ticket, gave a delivery address of a friend.. After one week, it didn't arrive.. called them.. after 3 weeks, didn't arrive.. called them in BOM.. had a quite professional lady on the phone who sorted it out.. .. after arriving SIN, they even allowed me to change the ticket w/o penalty, although there was a penalty in the regulations.. bottonline: everything works with India and AI, albeit in a strange matter! Big grin

2nd time: just 2 months ago, I booked a friend of mine on the DEL-BOM-NBO sector.. she had to leave, so I gave my contact number - booking took a couple of attempts.. [my computer is better protected than the State Bank of India, i.e. firewall etc. ] - next day 7 am they called me that her card was charged 4 times accidentally (my firewall), they had already refunded it and wanted to courier the ticket.. told em that I was on a professional trip, so they agreed to courier it a week later... good job!

3rd time, my boss asked me to inquire about fares on DEL-DXB.. tried the procedure, didn't work (only DEL-DXB, rest was OK).. called em up, they told me to try it again.. tried it, all of a sudden the system quoted me a price of Rs. 25.ooo/- for Delhi-New Delhi (  bigthumbsup  ) - called em again, wanted to be connected, they connected me to the sales dept, reconnected, again operator, reconnedted, bumped.. called their ticket office in BOM (as there was no response in DEL for two days), they told me to call yatrick, I got pissed, the connected me, bumped....

These my stories.. but in the end, everything works fine.. so give it a try and let us know  Wink

Thanks for all your help, folks. Just a quick update.....

I just bought my tickets to BOM (from ORD) using AI's website. I got the best deal on their website. They beat most travel agent quotes by at least $100.

The website wasn't too bad to use, though one irritating aspect was their insistence on knowing my Passport Number. I didnt remember my new Passport number so I just entered what I think was my old Passport number. Hopefully this doesnt cause hassles when I go to check in.

I could also select my seats thru' the website (though the seat map graphic was pretty pathetic looking).

This will be my first ever trip on Air India.... looking forward to it!?

I hope to write a trip report.

This is a US Government requirement for the APIS system.

APIS = Advance Passenger Information System

It is the electronic system whereby the US Government requires airlines to submit personal data on all passengers entering, exiting or overflying the US in advance of the flight.

Yes, write a report.. WHEN are you travelling, and via LHR or FRA? If you around mid-of July in FRA, let me know, I could get a pass and enter transit

When is it? June 9th?? If that date, unfortunately I will have to miss it... I am actually going to be in Pune that week and next.  Sad I am in BOM the last week before I leave.

Sorry about that... would have loved to meet Indian A.netters.
