SAN To Move Ahead With Short Term Solution

This has no bearing on the plan to find a new airport, but work will proceed as follows to meet SAN's 10-12 year needs:

Just got word that the Terminal 2 buildout will likely occur to the west, pending final board approval. Tenants will remain the same, with the addition of Northwest to better facilitate the SkyTeam deal with DL and CO - JetBlue, Indy and Frontier wil no longer have to play musical gates. Alaska will also "consider" moving from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2E to be next to American in the place of Northwest to give UA and US more room and be co-located with their International Arrival gate. There is potential for a shared CO, DL and NW ticket counter as Frontier, JetBlue, Indy and Hawaiian will move to the new gates.

The plan calls for a flip of the layout for T2W which opened in 1998. It includes the addition of 9 (and optionally 11) gates bringing the total gates to 50 Jetbridge and 4 Commuter Gates - 54 (or 56). Just 8 (6) gates short of SAN's 62 gate single runway capacity. Additional aircraft parking will also be made available to the west to improve the flow of traffic on the airfield during the first and last bank of flights when aircraft are shifted between gate and RON parking locations. Additional Cargo handling positions will also be built on the North Side of the Airfield for DHL, Airborne, UPS and Capital Cargo bringing them together with FedEx in a centralized location.

Other improvements include a new localizer for each end of the runway(FAA project), a new glideslope for runway 9 (FAA) (RWY 27 doesn't have one) and re-evaluation of TERPS to see further landing threshold displacement on RWY 9 will reduce minimums to mimumum CAT I standards. Also, installation of EMAS at the departure end of 27 and initial planning for SMGCS.

I think this is a good idea. Considering the wretched state of San Diego politics, these airport improvements are quite likely to be in use for more than the ten to twelve years envisaged.

What always amazes me about SAN is the combination of the complaints about "we're out of room" and the unused buildings/parking along Harbor Drive. If I had my way, those buildings would be levelled and parking structures installed. Then, the parking in front of Terminals 1 and 2 would be taken out...

Then the terminals would be torn down and rebuilt on the site of the parking lots. A people mover system would transport people between the terminals and the parking lots. With the extra space, possibly a second (albeit shorter) runway might be able to be built. If not, at least a taxiway further from 9/27 could be constructed.

Now, if I REALLY had my way...9/27 would be extended west, and everything under the flight path would be bought and re-zoned commercial, so no houses would be under the flight path.

The solution is not that easy. Those buildings are all tied up currently in litigation, plus there are extensive environmental issues with the land they sit on. Plus let's not forget that we are dealing with a single runway airport that has a limit to how much traffic it can support.

Oh FYI, I work for McMillin which is developing everything west of the airport...No they won't be getting that land. Furthermore, you can't build commercial under a flightpath either.

I thought one of the plans was to move the airport to the Naval Air Station!

Most of what I want is fantasy. It'll never happen. Captain Kirk will be piloting the starship Enterprise across the galaxy before a decision is made on that piece of land.

At least they're doing something. Maybe with tenant shuffle some renovation can be done on terminal one.

At this point (as a United flier), I'd be delighted with just that!  airplane

The City has zip to do with it and the Airport Authority has eminant domain control. Look for them to use it to block the city from doing anything with any potential site.

That was offered not once, but twice, Southwest declined. In addition, to make that happen you need MCRD so that you can have a full length taxiway on the northside. The airport was willing to foot such a bill in land aquisition from MCRD.

You people have caused more financial problems in San Diego by back door deals it's not even funny. How are those plans coming for housing on Miramar should it close by the way?

This is good news for SAN. In my opinion, T2West is one of most tastefully designed terminals I've been to (with the possible exception of the exterior). It will be nice to see an expansion.

Also good to see that airlines like HA, B6, F9 etc won't have to jostle around for gates in the future. Right now, it seems like most newer airline entrants at SAN use Terminal 2, including Aloha, Independence, jetBlue, Sun Country, and Hawaiian. The only exception is WestJet, which looks like it will be using Terminal 1 this summer.

Consolidating SkyTeam in one area is a good idea. Poor Aeromexico will still be far removed from Delta et al, but of course that's necessary because of their international operations. It seems like the trend nowadays is for alliance partners to be as close to each other as possible. Alaska moving to Terminal 2 is a good fit not just for their relationship with American but also the SkyTeam airlines. Hopefully after these changes we will see broader cooperation between alliance partners at SAN. The shared ticket counter/check-in area is a concept that airlines are still trying to hash out, with varying willingness and success. Nevertheless, problems would most likely be worked out when the T2W expansion goes online. Perhaps with the extra space we'll also see cooperation with lounges and gate assignments.

Boeing7E7: Do you have an idea of the timeframe for this project?

A little off topic, but at least Gate 1 in WN's area will be opening soon! Drove by yesterday and it looks like it's almost ready to go!

Yes, and where the gates go is a big pile of dirt lot right now. I head out there tomorrow.

Yeah, that new long term parking lot is actually to the south and west of the empty dirt lot. There is plenty of room to "flip" T2.

I wish they'd do something with T1 though. I hate that place...
