US Vs EU Medium Haul Flights

Why do most US-airlines offer First (2-2) and Economy (3-3) on medium haul flights, while in Europe this is Biss (2-3) and economy (3-3) ? (Between () is seat configuration in 737-A320)

I think because the EU airlines figured out that they can offer less space and still ask for the first class price.
