I was going through some pictures and I came across an America West 747!!!!!
I didn't know they had these. Does anyone know what these were used for and when they had them? And what ever had them? Any chance of AWA getting some more wide body planes???
Thanx,

FlyGuy

All I know is that they had to give them up in 80's when the airline had some finacial trouble.

I just looked at the picture which was taken in 1990 so what I said about AWA getting rid of their 747's in the 80's doesn't seem possible. Sorry about my mistake.

For the most part AWA used them on flights to and from Honolulu. Back in 1990 AWA flew twice daily between PHX and HNL. The morning flight was a non-stop and the afternoon flight stopped in Las Vegas. It was not a very profitable move for AWA for two simple reasons. 1) The airline industry was struggling as a whole from 1990-1994 and new routes from any airline were really a gamble. 2) Maintaining a very small fleet of extremely sophisticated and mechanically complex aircraft is really stupid. Two other examples of this are Continental and their A-300's and AWA (again) and the Fokker-70's.

Cheers,
Markus

AW used the 747 from PHX to HNL...mainly filled with mileage-awards people. The 747's then continued on from HNL to Nagoya, Japan. AW had plans to expand their 747 routes from HNL to HKG, SIN, TPE, and SYD. The Gulf War also caused fuel prices to go up...and the HNL-Nagoya route was given to NW. HNL svcs. stopped in 1993.

Did AWA operate any other wide bodies other than the 747?

I've flown on 9V-SPK.

AWA also flew the 747 to Mexico City (I think).

We flew an AWA 747 from PHX to LAS. It was almost empty I think. they had at one time an order for the A300 and the 767, but both were canceled. The 747's were called "Birds of Paradise".

I know they flew them to Honolulu. In 1992, I was in first class on a Delta L-1011 from HNL-LAX-LAS. Our flight was delayed in HNL to wait for passengers from an America West 747 that had blown tires on takeoff and returned to the airport. The lady next to me was from that flight and she was complaining about Delta's first class seats, saying how America West had much more comfortable first class seats with a lot more legroom. She was going to Las Vegas like I was, and she was very upset that Delta wouldn't let her stay on our flight to Las Vegas. She had to get off in LAX and catch an America West flight to Las Vegas. I think America West got rid of their 747s shortly after that.

For a short time America West was an international carrier...They flew to Japan with them, as well as Hawaii...It was all done out of Phoenix. They got the 747-200s from KLM
