Before doing much needed reformas (repairs) at Congonhas in Sao Paulo, there was a patio where you could sit, have lunch, and watch the planes. However, the last time I was there, the new building blocked the view. Does anyone know if the patio is back or has moved?

I'm sorry. The new building will be increased (adding 4 fingers to CGH) and they will start improvements on the first floor.
But CGH is nowadays one of the best views upon the boarding area with giant glass which allows a full runaway view.

Ahhh, Sampa737 welcome to A.net !

I live near CGH and enjoyed watching the planes from the upperdeck patio. I guess those days are gone. GRU is just too far away.

You know you wanna take the Marginal up there at 5PM. Good times. Welcome to Airliners.net!
PS>Do they still have that observation deck at GRU?

They closed it several years ago. I dont remember really well, but wasnt it just the roof of the terminals? I was too young to remember well, but I used to love to go there!! I still check almost everytime I go there to see if they re-opened the stairs that lead up to the deck...but not yet Sad

They still have a pretty good place on the third floor though. And of course, there is always the [crowded] McDonalds  Wink

Cheers,
PPVRA

Yup. That's the one. I remember one time I went up there with my dad and there were these other folks and this little boy asked if that little car that assists in the push back goes up with the plane. Priceless.
Hmmm...in the third floor? Next time I'm down there visiting the family I'll have to go check it out.

So this is why there's been a lack of photos from CGH of late? I hadn't heard of the second floor restaurant closing...or at least the view being shut off. Very sad to hear that as I sipped many Ciaparinhas there while spotting and photographing back in 2000...
Besides your room at the Golden Flats, is there any other place around there that's good for pics?

Thanks
Jeffrey

Oh my...the marginal at anytime but at 5pm...I'll stay away.

In regards to CGH, best place to watch planes now is from your car at the end of the runway as they take off and land, and they get close!

In regards to GRU, there are still several places to see planes in both terminals; McDonald's and Pizza Hut in one and JetBurger in the other. Of course ya gotta get there early in the morning or late in the day as the airport is almost vacant midday.

Have any of you guys ever checked-out Brasilia airport? quite a view... It's a shame there are no more international flights straight to/from brasilia... the aircraft you see are now practically restricted to 737s and A320s.

the view of aircraft approaching CGH is indeed very impressive!

no commercial potential

Yup, there is the arrivals floor (way down in the bottom of the building), the departure (second/main floor) and next to the elevators/bathrooms there is a staircase that leads up to the third floor (not much there at all). Sometimes it gets a little crowded, but most of the time is completly empty or maybe just a few people are there (you are basicaly above the McDonalds/JetBurger. Much better view).

Cheers,
PPVRA

Agreed, PPVRA. The view at the 3rd floor is much better. I still miss, though, the open places that existed before (I remember when I was a kid and could sit with my parents within a few meters of the planes here at REC, and not only see them, but hear and even smell them). They were nicer for the spotters/photographers too!

PS: My first post. Finally, after months reading these fine threads, took the time to register.

I remember i've read once (maybe in Flap Internacional or Aero Magazine), that the observation deck of GRU was closed because UA and AA were complaining that people used to throw objects in the aircraft.... Sincerely, i think it's hard to believe that....

About that restaurant of CGH, it still exists, but with that terminal in front, so you can only see the very end (or beggining) of the runway. I once had to wait my friend who was arriving from FLN and it was quite disappointing that there were no place for non-travellers to watch the planes...

Most of the CGH shots were taken from the Golden Flat Hotel, which closed their doors in Dec '04. Apparently competition in the form of nearby Ibis Hotel contributed to their demise. The latter hotel apparently has good views to the airport, but their windows wont open - unlike the Golden Flat. I'll be checking it out soon, there's still hope yet.

Bem vindos.

About CGH, the view is blocked, the best spot was alredy said, the end of acess road.
About GRU, still have a uper deck, were U can see the planes, but not as before, were we could go to the end of the terminals.
McDonalds gives a good view of T-2 wind D, and the rest area patio, were usually BRA planes are.
