Just got my copy of the June issue of Airliner World and it says Airbus has Delivered 2 two A342's to SAA. Last month it said that they took delivery of 1 A342? Anyone have an explanation for this as i was under the impression that the A342 production had stopped?
cheers  Smile

The production has stopped - all A340-200s that SAA currently has are ex-Lufthansa airplanes.

Why did SAA take these? I read that the A340-200 was unpopular amongst airlines because they had high-costs of operation (same as A340-300) with less pax seats.

What route are these deployed on?

I've seen them in GRU and ZRH, I know they've been to FRA on occasion (on the CPT-FRA flight, not on JNB-FRA) - but I guess that you can probably see them, depending on demand, on several routes operated by A340-300s.

As for why they took the planes - don't really know, but maybe, in light of their A340-300/600 purchase, they were what was available fastest and most fitting for the fleet that SAA had in mind... SAA being a close partner of LH probably didn't hurt that deal either...

Probably the operation costs are compensated by low acquisition costs  Wink

It could have been either A340-300s or A340-600s - but no A340-200s were recently delivered to SAA.

Did Airliner World, by any chance, mention registrations for the planes?
