New UA Merger Rumor (ATLAS?)

Just got back to SFO from PVG. On my trip I spoke with one of our First Officers (crew is obviously not the best source of news) but he did mention United and our Board's previous interest in merging/acquiring Atlas Cargo.

I know I have seen a lot of renewed focus our cargo ops on internal communications and it has been said a number of times over the years one of the biggest mistakes we ever did was to stop UA Cargo. Apparently within the past couple of years there has been talk of UA wet leasing Atlas to increase our cargo availability but ALPA would not have that. (understandable)

It makes sense to increase cargo given our enormous reach into many slot restricted airports... we shall see all in due time!

This same First Officer said his gut instinct tells him that within a year of emerging from Chapter 11 we'll see announcements regarding acquiring Atlas and then shortly thereafter some sort of Alliance or Merger with CO.

Fun stuff to hear and talk about! God help us with the merging of seniority lists!

Interesting concept, however considering the over 12,000 CHAOS petitions delivered to Dipak Jian (as well as the mechanics' decision), not so sure how much longer United will last.

Interesting little tidbit as well:
In a letter to the AFA's general counsel, United's general counsel wrote that it "will discipline -- with reluctance but without hesitation -- up to and including termination, any flight attendant who engages in CHAOS activity." The airline called on the union to drive this point home to its members.

AFA spokeswoman Sara Dela Cruz called United's letter "laughable" and said the union is set for action if need be.

"We're ready to go," she added.

OK, sort of relevent.

I think we should assume that we're looking at a United post chapter 11 when speaking of mergers.

Maybe it would be more wise to start focussing on getting out of C11 in the first place.

What kind of crack is this woman smoking? I think I read the book she is working from....let's see here.....yep, here it is "One Thousand Ways to Shut Down an Airline, The Eastern Airlines Story". Best of luck to you guys, but before you start anything I'd look up the address to the nearest unemployment office on the Peninsula. Ya'll might not have an airline to go back to work at. I was working at Eastern at the end. Nothing like seeing a board full of cancelled flights and an army of security guards grabbing security badges and sending everyone to the parking lot busses.

On the upside, though...if something were to go through with Continental, it would make for an amazing airline.

I wonder how old the oldest FA at CO is?

Back to cargo, remember the president of UA Cargo, Scott Dolan, used to be COO at Atlas/Polar.

Didn't Worldwide Cargo fail miserably? Or was it cancelled because the DC-10s were retired?

CO isn't allowed to break wind without NW permission. I can't see NW allowing this.

Amen. If this rumor is true, which I doubt, then UA's management has totally lost it. Their airline is bleeding ink, losing cash, in bankruptcy, facing a mutiny from labor, about to abrogate their employees' pension plans, and this is what they are focusing their attention on? Spending millions to buy another cargo carrier? Didn't UA learn its lesson from the last time it tried to buy another carrier?

Again, I doubt this rumor is true, but if it is -- this is not going to play very well with the frontline workers already furious at all the cuts.

To be fair to UA, cargo is about the only market making money right now. So, if they could get Atlas cheaply, it may work out in their favor. Tilton pulled off an interesting merger before he came to UA remember.  Wink

This is true, cargo is about the only thing at the legacies actually showing profits these days, but I still don't think it is smart for UA to send out their desperately needed cash just so they can buy a ready-made cargo carrier, particularly considering that they already have an enormous global cargo operation, and the headaches of integration that would no doubt arise.

Well, the fleet of 744Fs would fit in nicely. Employees would be another story...
