UA Awkwardly Quiet

Maybe it is just me, but I feel that United has been awkwardly quiet recently. They used to have several press releases every week, but over the past two months or so they have reduced that "chatter" dramatically. In fact, there were only three releases during the past 30 days (as you can see on United's Press Releases page).

Does anybody have an idea as to why they are suddenly this quiet? Does it mean anything?

Well, the RUMOR that I heard from one of my friends that used to work at UA said that UA is done as of June 1. ( No flamers please, this is just rumor that came up in a conversion with my friend last friday).

IMHO the only way I see UA closing by June 1 would be if both the F/A's and the Tech's follow through with the strike options. This would be stupid IMO since then they would not have an airline to work for after that.

Oh god, let's start talking like this. UA has had their DIP financing extended and worked out deals with the creditors. RUMORS are always found to be flawed in these cases. Let's all pray that a deal can be worked out and the FA's, IAM and Mechanics all come to some kind of understanding. The last thing we need on this is everyone saying they are dead.

Well, IIRC, they are in court today over the pension issue, so they might have been given legal counsel to essentially not say anything (at least about general financial/bankrupcy-emergence issues). I guess we'll have to see what comes from that.

Maybe it is all quiet because there is nothing MAJOR to report..Ever think about that. Maybe UA is almost ready to pull out of CH11 and they are being quiest for competitive reasons. Maybe the things that are going on are of no interest to the general public (A.net geeks excluded)....

Just a few thoughts IMHO.

Um. What do you mean done as of June 1st? Do you mean they are going to cease trading as of June 1st?

If so, I find that a little hard to believe, however if hyperthetically they did go out of business, what would happen to my flight to Miami in the Summer?

The only thing at UA that Labor would like to see done on June 1 is Tilton reign as CEO. He has raped UA dry to the bones and is abusing BK law to maintain his bottom end not the companys.

Paul,

If they did go out of business by June 1st and your flight was after that then as long as you've paid by Visa or credit card you'll get your money back. If you paid by cash however it's a different story.

Hope that helps,

G

these "i heard from a friend" rumors are the poison of this forum. how many times has there been a thread about "a big announcement coming from (insert every carrier here) this monday"?

the vast majority of the time, no announcement follows, or it if does, it's something about adding a frequency to a route or a change to a frequent flier program. nonetheless, the string of "will my trip be cancelled/how will i get refunded/should i book my vacation" posts always follows.

in reality, either nothing major will likely happen, or all of us HAVE NO IDEA what it will be. is it worth speculating and getting all worked up about these extreme scenarios?

Maybe the person who writes the press releases already found another job, and there's no one to replace them yet... Wink

I assume there's been nothing much out of UA because it's business as usual.

And why would any airline in North America shut down in June? It's right before the most profitable time of the year. Unless strikes push UA over the edge, I wouldn't imagine there's much risk of them folding until fall.

I agree to a point. Some rumors do and some don't. This one from my friend, is one that has been circulating within UA mainline pilots for awhile. Trust me, I thought long and hard before posting that tidbit. After all, aren't we all here to talk about anything related to aviation (within reason, and fact)?

Cheers

maybe their counsel has told them to keep a lid on it going in to this tenuous week of court battles.

June 1? Yeah, that is a good conspiracy theory, but so far from the truth. I haven't heard that from any pilots, btw..what differentiates a "mainline" pilot from others???"

Simple, either you fly for United (mainline) or express-->IE: AWAC, Mesa, Skywest, Atlantic Coast and so on.

Mainline usually refers to pilots who fly bigger equipment. Example; 737 series or buses verses canadairs and EMB's

On this subject, rumor on another forum is that UA had 8 763s repo'd this morning.
