Which plane do you guys prefer for long haul international flights. I have never flown on an A340, but it would seem to be a better option for me since my wife and I are travelling together. (The A340 is 2-4-2 as opposed to the 747's 3-4-3) Business class is out of our price range, so I am mainly interested in cabin space in economy. Thanks in advance,
Ben

From LAX
Air France to CDG
United to CDG

I would recommand the A340 and try to book a flight with an operator where you can book your seat at the moment of making your reservation. A340 is a great, quite aircraft, very comfortable even in economy, certainly when you are able to two seats near the window.

Because of the 2-4-2 seating I prefer the A-340. I can also recommend the Swissair flight from LAX to ZRH (SR 107, leaving daily at 3pm) operated with MD 11. They have a 3-4-2 seating. The MD 11 is very confortable aircraft and they have an excellent service.

I would opt for the 747-400. The 3-4-3 seats actually give you a better chance of sitting next to one another. The aircraft it comfortable, quiet and FASTER.

2-4-2 does not mean a spacious, comfortable cabin. The A340 interior is quite cramped and dated. Choose the 747. Arrive faster, and in style.

I would also prefer the 747 over the A340, it has better engines from P&W, GE, and Rolls Royce to give it the best performance, as far as takeoffs and cruising speed to get you there faster.

747!!! I have flown both on virgin lax to lhr and i prefer the 747...ask the gate agent if there is any way she could block the seat between you 2, if the flights not completely packed they will sometimes do this for couples, it worked for my wife and i, and it was quite roomy..unfortunately those flights to europe are usually packed.

Take the 340, all the flights I had FRA-DTW (LH) were smooth, arrived earlier than scheduled and it is a very nice atmosphere onboard since the plane is so quiet and roomy in the cabin. Don´t know which airlines go from LAX to europe with A340, maybe AirFrance.
I have never been on a B747 but my girlfriend loves the Airbus and she was used to fly 747 with KLM and BA.
Have a nice time in europe and enjoy your flight.

While the seating is the same as the A340, you could try the A330 with Aer Lingus direct from LAX to Dublin. Great plane and very comfortable flights in the EI Airbuses

I concur with Pilot 21, the Airbus A330-200 that Aer Lingus uses between Ireland and Los Angeles is a fine aircraft.

I had the pleasure of flying on it last May when they actually used it for my flight from Boston to Shannon (St. Mella EI-LAX). As a matter of fact, we were in Ireland when they began flying the SNN-DUB-LAX route. Made the news overthere since it was Aer Lingus' first service to the Western United States.

Hey United 777ORD, you got to do something about United's overall service! I'm sure you heard that United finished dead last in the customer satisfaction report issued this week! (-:

Just for clarification, here are the non-stops to Europe from LAX (that I can remember):

United: Heathrow (777), Paris CDG (777)
American: Heathrow (767-300), Paris CDG (767-300) (Changing to 777 in May)
British Airways: Heathrow (747-400)
Virgin: Heathrow (747-400, A340)
Air New Zealand: Heathrow (747-400)
Aer Lingus: Dublin (A330)
Lufthansa: Frankfurt (747-400)
SwissAir: Zurich (MD-11)
Air France: Paris (747-400)
Alitalia: Rome (MD-11)
KLM: Amsterdam (747-400?)

Any others??? (SAS? Northwest?) Obviously, there is a very wide variety of airlines and planes you can take to many points in Europe from LAX.

My personal favorite is the 777. (I'm not sure why you didn't list that one as a possibility...)

Is United's LAX-LHR route changing to the 747-400 this summer? I can't remember whether it was SFO or LAX.
