CO's Coach Pub In The 70's

Back in about 1973, I flew ORD/LAX on a CO 747 and return trip was a DC10 (yes this was in the days before the hub and spoke system). On both aircraft, there was an area in Y class about 20 feet in length that was set up as a lounge with a bar, some small tables, comfy upholstered chairs etc. They had bowls of pocorn set out and it was a place to hang out and pass the time. It made the flight very pleasant. While there were quite a few airlines that had such an arrangement in F class (especially upper deck of the early 747's) I don't recall anyone else doing this in coach. Does anyone know of any other airlines that provided a lounge area in coach?

The "Pub" concept was modified and was still flying with Continental Micronesia to and from the Pacific Rim including Japan, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii until the early to mid 1990's!

Wow that sounds nice! But really, more ideas for EK! It would get me to fly on them (not that I wouldn't if I got the chance!!) but why not have on the upper deck of the A380, a large section of lounge (jacuzzi anyone?)! But hey, I can dream can't I?  Smile

Flew on those many times, and they were very nice. National also had some
Dc10's with a coach lounge. In particular I remember the one on a DC10 named Tammy.

I flew on both National and Continental. Brings back memories of National's triangle fares (coast to coast via Florida). I can remember rushing to the pub seats after take off and being very bummed to told to return to your seats for landing.

Wow- didn't know CO Micronesia kept the concept that long. I figured that with the days of regulation came the end of extravagant use of space on airliners. Who knows, somebody may start this up on their A380's, especially if their load factors aren't what they hoped when they bought 'em. Might look better to the paying passengers than a bunch of empty seats!

The bars were a great addition on many airlines. Do any of you remember the Bars that Alitalia had set up on the 747 in Prima Class, or the MD-11 in Magnifica Class? Those were the days! But no one had the art down as well as Braniff! .... ahhh.... Just looking at the Braniff pictures would make anyone envious!

Braniff had a Pub-Lounge on their 747's for a while. Probably one of the most posh aircraft lounges at the time.

Canadian Pacific was also, I think noted for their lounges!

Yes, CP did have some aircraft lounges, they had a more European Flair to them than those of CO, NA & BN. For a while PS had a lounge on an L10-11 that was in the bottom of the aircraft. I toured it one time when it was on the ground at LAX, but never did fly on it, & I don't believe they had it in their fleet very long.

American had a piano bar concept in the back section of coach in their early 747-100's.

AA had a coach lounge on its 747's and DC-10's for a short time!

AA777, I had forgot about that piano bar they used to have. That was real unusual for AA, as back then they always had the most conservative interiors in all their aircraft.
