Next weekend I will be travelling to New York for a little holiday. I was hoping to go to JFK for a day, as I haven't been in almost 4 years. I would like to know of any good spotting places either on the airport or closely surrounding it. As I am travelling by train all spots must be served, or closely located to public transportation, whether it be airport buses, or the subway, etc. Thank you for all your help!

From inside Delta's Terminal 3 especially the food court,Terminal One's upper level food court, and the Top level to the Parking garage for Terminals 1-3.
There are no really good views from any of the other Terminals,if you had a car I could tell you a bunch of other great locations but since your going by public transportation stick to the places I recomended.

It depends on how the winds blow, but if they are in your favor the active runways will have the planes landing right over the Price Cosco and Marshalls in a nearby mall. There is only one cosco near JFK, wone you are there, if the winds are near paralle. w/ those runways... it is a GREAT plave to spot. Or you can try to get up to the TWR. I got up there. Call /em up.

North Cargo area,Northwest airlines cargo area, and the customs service building.I was there today and there were plenty of people spotting today.
Just drive around the cargo and hangar areas,if you find a nice spot near the fence where you can park great, theres tons of great spots. However if you come to a guard post turn around you've gone to far.
Like I said there were plenty of spotters there today,a few out of state plates driving around, some of these drivers would find a spot and whip out huge telescoping cameras poping pictures of what ever.
Like I said the Customs building is a must, and the parking garage for Terminals 1-3 is really good, top level.I had lunch in Delta's Terminal 3 today, you can get in there without a ticket and cameras are fine just don't go crazy taking pictures of everything you see.
Where I had lunch today was the best spot in the terminal for views of the main departure runway and the Delta tarmac. It's a food court at the back of the Terminal with plenty of seats against the large windows looking out on all the action. This spot is a must see, just look for the large food court.Note their is a smaller food court on a upper level in the front of the Terminal, thats good but the one you want is the one in the back.
I saw plenty of wide bodies up close, like South African 747-400 to Johanesburg and a Malev 767-300.There are also plenty of Delta 767s,I got to see Delta's new Lyon flight board today.Looks like that flight will make out fine,Im not sure if today was the inagural flight but there were plenty of festive French items promoting it all over the place.
