Turkish Airways will start 3 x week nonstop flights IST-LIS as of 7 June/05. The flights will be operated in codeshare with TAP Portugal.

TK flight is expected to rely about 50% on O&D traffic and 50% on onward connections with TAP to Brazilians destinations. TK flight will allow for immediate connection with TP's extensive network of 40 weekly flights to 6 destinations in Brazil.

TP and TK working together, interesting. Which then makes me think that TK would be a good addition to Star Alliance: network coverage, size, and the same "frills but without any chique or style" kind of positioning as most other Star members (with the notable exception of SQ of course).

And it would bring TK closer to its once Qualiflyer partner Swiss(air)...

I thought they already had that service and then checked thy.com and was surprised to see that they didn't have it(unless they did it seasonally before) Hope they do good on the route.

TK is in major expansion mode(getting 40+ new aircraft including widebodies) and we discussed on a.net before with insiders and they mentioned that TK is a year or two away from joining an alliance. Skyteam was mentioned as a higher possibility.

I personally think that TK is much closer to Star Alliance, even because of the importance of FRA for TK operations.

Very good point, due to the fact that Germany is TK's biggest market outside of Turkey obviously. To my understanding though TK is counting on a lot of North American pax(They will add a lot of new destinations after the new aircraft arrivals) using IST for Middle East and Eastern Europe connections, look at the Skyteam and you would see that gap. Having said that they would pick the alliance that they believe would bring in the most bucks.

Correct. I dont think TK would cooperate closely with TP if it were not having in mind a possible agreement with Star. As said above, TK fits on Star profitle.

I would not read much into THY's cooperation with TAP as meaning anything close to joining Star. TK has several code share and block space agreements that span various airline groupings.

An alliance membership for THY is likely down the road in a few years. TK will make its alliance choice based on which alliance will make the best use of the carriers strategic Istanbul location and also provide the greatest financial benefit to the carriers bottom line.

As of current thinking, Star is the lowest choice for several reasons. One happens to be as Germany is Turkeys largest single European market any alliance with Lufthansa would be difficult from a regulatory sense as the two carriers would control over 90% of the scheduled service market between the two countries. Another strong reason against Star according to THY's thinking is the alliance would not provide nor make Istanbul as a premier hub airport. Star has quite a dense network of large Central European hubs (FRA / MUC / VIE and ZRH potentialy in the future) and thus would be unlikely shift much traffic to connect over Istanbul.

On the otherhand, both Oneworld and particularly Skyteam have indicated they would make Istanbul a significant regional hub. Both Delta and Air France have made some preliminary ovatures and studies regarding THY membership.
